An exciting new exhibition has come to the State Library of South Australia, giving car and history enthusiasts an insider’s look at an epic archive of an iconic car maker’s operations, workforce dynamics, technological innovations, and more.
‘Rear Vision: The Holden Collection’ showcases the rich social history of General Motors Holden.
First established as a saddlery in Adelaide during the 1850s, Holden later transitioned to automobile assembly and motor body building before being taken over by General Motors in 1931. From its origins as an iconic South Australian brand to the launch of Australia’s own car in 1948 and eventually to the company’s closure in 2017, the exhibition tells the stories of long-time employees, women in the workforce, and the role Holden played in shaping Australia’s post-war identity.

Since the 90s, the State Library of South Australia has maintained a long and proud association with General Motors Holden (GMH), when Holden started donating some historic material to the library. As the Holden brand ended in Australia, the State Library became home to its archive, making sure that this iconic brand’s memories and stories are being kept alive for current and future generations to access and research.
Amongst the Holden Collection are archival records of GM Holden Ltd and Holden’s various iterations, including JA Holden & Co, Holden & Frost Limited, and Holden’s Motor Body Builders Limited.
Holden operated in South Australia for 75 years as its own entity, before becoming an official part of General Motors in 1931. The library houses unique artifacts, including rare car plans— the only ones in South Australia, with all the other plans being held in Victoria, making this an especially exciting insight for fans.
Rear Vision: The Holden Collection’ offers visitors the chance to discover original materials, rare documents, and contributions from former employees, which each offer a glimpse into the rise and fall of a beloved Australian institution.
State Library of South Australia Director, Megan Berghuis shared, “As the custodian of the stories of South Australia, it is incredible for us to bring this important part of South Australia’s history to life. Holden has a rich and proud history in South Australia, having shaped our manufacturing and automotive industries, and built a community that is truly part of the fabric of our state,” she said.
“It has been a huge effort by our archival and exhibitions teams, working closely with the Holden Manufacturing Heritage Association at Elizabeth, to create this exhibition, curating a selection of unique and fascinating artefacts, drawings, images and resources from our extensive archives to share the story of this much-loved brand.”
Throughout the exhibition’s duration, there will be some special events of note. Check out talks by authors, researchers, historians, and classic Holden specialists, as well as children’s activities, family days and Holden car showcases in the State Library forecourt.
