This Winter Solstice, one SA venue is flipping everything on it’s head. Transforming the dark to light and turning the shortest day into a 24-hour experience of sculpture, music, and ritual, Home of Plenty is deliberately pushing boundaries – and they’ve invited you to join them.
Returning for its second year this June, the Currency Creek cellar door’s Solstice party brings together local artists, chefs and performers for an atmospheric winter fest following the theme of renewal, reflection and connection.
To draw out the fun even longer, the event coincides with ‘Solstice Sculptures,’ a two-month sculptural exhibition in the venue running from early June through July that spotlights local artists, culminating in the all-night Winter Solstice gathering.
When listening to the event details, a few descriptions came to mind. Witching hour, sensual revelry, or a creative commune enticing enough to draw a crowd to the South Coast even in the dead of winter.
The 24-hour rave cliche’s won’t find their place here, blotto hype isn’t the point. The night instead offers a slow burn in an intimate setting allowing guests to meet likeminded people, and the rollout has a little bit of everything.
Expect to see works from local artists Ailish Ling, Rebecca Hartman Kearns, and Sam Mulcahy alongside fire performers, tarot readers and pottery workshops that all lean into the theme of rebirth. New this year are saunas and ice baths, so the brave of heart can face the weather, take a plunge, and feel invigorated.
Instead of headline DJs, friends will spin their favourite vinyl under the gentle brief of ‘renewal’. People who know the space intimately play background beats that echo its spirit and vibes, keeping the focus on the art.
At the heart of event is a longtable candlelit dinner served in a tucked-away space with it’s own heartbeat and energy. Catered by local talent Billy Dohnt from Does Catering – formerly of Salopian Inn and Euroa Butter Factory – the multi-course offering will showcase seasonal produce paired with Home of Plenty’s wines. You can book for the food experience alone, or take it up a notch with bottomless wine, guided by the cellar door host who’ll share the stories behind every bottle.
There will also be a bar and pizzas for those opting out of the ticketed stuff.
Reserve a spot to stay overnight and wake to yoga sessions at sunrise or skip the sleep entirely and enjoy the all-night activations. There’s no pressure. What moves you, who you meet, where the night leads is a choose your own adventure kind of scenario.
While Home of Plenty main man Ben prefers to remain behind the scenes, his creative fingerprint is everywhere. The idea was born from a love of throwing parties, an itch to house creativity, and a space to make it possible. From wine labels and visual identity to the curation of artists and atmosphere, the ethos is unmistakably community-first and artist-driven. All the artists are local and 90% are from the South Coast.
24-hour Winter Solstice is a unique celebration of place. While winter’s cold wrath often urges retreat, here it becomes an invitation. Across shifting hours and changing light, the cellar door transforms. Art glows, wine flows and music drifts through the air. It’s an ode to the creative pulse of the South Coast and the chance to experience winter in a different way, and it’s calling your name this June.
