Honki Tonki Is Your New Dumpling Mecca

For those who love to chase up new venues, get in first and blab to all their friends about it; go forth and meet Sit Lo’s new sibling.

It’s been teased for many behind a host of newspaper sheets along East Hindley Street, before the fast food shops and bars take over in earnest. We knew it was from the team behind Sit Lo, but it couldn’t be Sit Lo 2.0. It needed it’s own identity.

Well, with no reservations and no liquor and a focus on Hong-Kong Style fresh street food focussed on dumplings and noodles, Honki Tonki has been born.

There is an immediate sense of playfulness with the bright pink motif and cartoonish placemats, and the dishes themselves seem to be a side step from Sit Lo – freshly prepared bowls of meat, noodles, seaweed and dumplings. Added to Sit Lo’s menu, none of it would be out of place but at a separate venue, it also seems wholly appropriate.

The team have ‘soft opened’ for the moment with some work still to be done on the shop frontage and probably a bit of testing of dishes and the kitchen to occur before they make a big song and dance about what they’re doing. But for those who love to chase up new venues, get in first and blab to all their friends about it; go forth.

Honki Tonki is located at 38 Hindley Street and open Monday to Saturday from 12-9pm. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to get an idea of what they’re about.
