New Glenelg eatery Hooked has transformed fish and chips into elevated eats

Hooked in Glenelg is redefining the classic fish and chip shop with fresh South Australian seafood and a touch of coastal flair.

Tucked just back from the shoreline in Glenelg’s Broadway strip, Hooked isn’t your average seaside takeaway. This new-school fish and chippery brings a refined, almost restaurant-like energy to a dining staple that’s been begging for a glow-up.

Behind the project is Tom James-Wallace, the Operations and Brands Manager who, along with his business partner Sam Worrell-Thompson – director of EMBR Hospitality and their team, have reimagined a classic with elegance, creativity and a deep respect for South Australian seafood.

“The Glenelg community has welcomed us since May last year when we opened Oliveti and Spread,” Tom explains.

“So bringing fish and chips back to Glenelg was a no-brainer. But we knew it had to be something fresh, a little fancy, and still easy for a family dinner.”

Hooked operates from the Spread Deli space in the evenings, cleverly transforming the venue without losing its warm, approachable charm.

There’s no gimmick here, just good taste—literally and aesthetically.

The Hooked menu speaks volumes. It balances familiar comfort with dishes that nod to a more elevated, health-conscious approach, many influenced by flavours from their neighbouring restaurant, Oliveti.

Top of the list? “The Market Fish Bowl,” says Tom. “It’s so fresh and vibrant. We’ve leaned into our restaurant quality flavours, but still kept those classic options too.”

For those looking to feed the family or enjoy a beachside feast, the ‘Sandy Box’ is also a crowd favourite.

Hooked is rooted in a commitment to quality and sustainability.

“We use South Australian seafood and oysters, and work closely with our suppliers to make sure everything is as fresh and local as possible,” Tom says.

“We focus on fish that are line-caught or net-caught, which means less waste and more care. Plus, with PIRSA’s tight regulations, we know we’re serving something truly sustainable.”

It’s this thoughtfulness that sets Hooked apart. It doesn’t chase trends. Instead, it redefines what a fish and chip shop can be in a state with some of the best coastline in the country.

“The Broadway strip in Glenelg is alive,” Tom adds, “and we’re happy to keep contributing to that.”

With plans to expand beyond Friday and Saturday evenings as the seasons shift, Hooked is shaping up to be a year-round favourite for locals and visitors alike.

It’s the kind of place where you grab your order and wander down to the water to watch the sun dip behind the sea—simple, beautiful, and just that little bit indulgent.
