Horse Racing at the Bay Discovery Centr

The Bay Discovery Centre is proud to present the historic 1888 Melbourne Cup from 2 Feb to 13 March 2012 to coincide with Adelaide Cup celebrations.

Horse racing enthusiasts will be treated to a rare opportunity to view the Elaine and Jim Wolfensohn Gift – The 1888 Melbourne Cup, courtesy of the National Gallery of Australia.

Made in England by Elkington & Co Birmingham, The Centennial Cup features three magnificent horses cast in silver weighing 800 grams, and is surmounted on a large silver plated base.

Deputy Mayor of the City of Holdfast Bay Rosemary Clancy said it’s an exciting exhibit.

“The Bay Discovery Centre is an ideal venue for this beautiful cup.”

“Being so close to the centre of our celebrations for the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville, it will be easy for enthusiasts to jump on the tram to come to Glenelg and admire this beautiful piece of horse racing history.”

The 1888 Melbourne Cup winner was Mentor, who ran the race in three minutes 3m 30.75s.

The Elaine and Jim Wolfensohn gift

In 1988 Jim Wolfensohn (the Australian-born former president of the World Bank) generously donated funds to enable the National Gallery of Australia to buy museum-quality works of art to travel Australia as part of a unique exhibition program.
