Australians are in for a sweet treat with Coles’ award-winning hot cross buns making an early appearance on supermarket shelves. However, this year, Coles is set to donate 20 cents from the sale of every six and nine-pack of Coles Brand hot cross buns to the children’s cancer charity, Redkite, until January 2nd.

The beloved hot cross buns, which have garnered a dedicated following, come in various flavors, including traditional fruit buns, chocolate, apple and cinnamon, fruit-free, and traditional mini fruit buns.

Priced from just $4.50 each or two packs for $7, these treats are not only a delightful addition to the festive season but also an opportunity to contribute to a noble cause.

Last year, more than 2.5 million hot cross buns were sold before January 1st, showcasing Australians’ growing appetite for these delectable buns in December. Coles, in recognising this trend, aims to utilise the popularity of the Easter staple to channel much-needed donations to the Redkite charity.

Coles’ sales data reveals that in December 2022, the states with the highest per capita consumption of hot cross buns were Victoria, followed by Queensland and Western Australia. It seems Adelaidians aren’t as crazy about the buns?

Coles General Manager of Bakery, Kate Roff, expressed her excitement about leveraging the enthusiasm for hot cross buns in December to make a significant impact on the lives of children and families affected by cancer.

She stated, “Our award-winning hot cross buns have long been a cherished part of our post-Christmas offering, and this year, we’re proud to add an extra layer of sweetness through our partnership with Redkite, to support families affected by childhood cancer.”

Coles has been in partnership with Redkite for a decade, raising over $50 million since 2013 through the generosity of its customers. The funds have been instrumental in providing emotional, practical, and financial support to families grappling with childhood cancer. Redkite’s services range from hospital-to-home counseling to financial assistance during treatment.

One of the families impacted by Redkite’s support is that of twins, Rose and Lily, who faced a challenging ordeal when Rose was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma at the age of three during the pandemic. Redkite stepped in to provide emotional and financial support to their mother, Cass, who needed help as Rose underwent treatment at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Redkite Chief Executive Officer, Monique Keighery, expressed her gratitude for Coles’ ongoing support and the generosity of its customers. She emphasized the importance of these donations in ensuring that families facing childhood cancer do not have to navigate their journey alone.

Coles’ hot cross bun range, which includes customer favourites and a new Coles Finest offering, is now available in stores.
