Lost in a Forest’s famous Hot Honey is now for sale

From the owner of beloved restaurant Lost in a Forest comes SA-based hot sauce company Hézues Hot Sauce, which really brings the heat.

Heat meets sweet in an SA product that’s sure to become a household staple: Hot Honey from Hézues Hot Sauce.

The new company was founded by Lost in a Forest owner Charlie Lawrence because restaurant customers kept asking to buy the house-made sauces on the pizzas. Hézues debuted at Willunga Chilli Fest a few weeks ago with six varieties of hot sauce.

The sauces have some admittedly strange flavours, such as Bundaberg Rum and red ghost pepper sauce (rated 16/10 on the hotness scale) and the pineapple jerk sauce.

A fan favourite, the Hot Honey, is used for Lost in a Forest’s salami pizza. It’s made with sweet orange blossom honey from Hahndorf’s Buzz Honey with smoked Trinidad scorpion, habanero, and red and white ghost chillis blended throughout. Lawrence grows all of the chillis himself and finds Hot Honey to be a particularly interesting blend.

“I’m really passionate about growing chillis,” he says. “I have maybe 40 plants in my yard.”

“Apart from the heat, the Hot Honey has a really interesting flavour as well.”

In addition to owning a restaurant and now a hot sauce company, Lawrence doubles–––no, triples––as a graphic designer, designing all of the Hézues logos and merchandise, which includes t-shirts, socks and aprons. Going forward, the website will also have recipes with each hot sauce, including Hot Honey baked Brie and cocktails.

With products grown, designed, blended and sold exclusively in South Australia, Lawrence takes pride in his community and is excited to share his new products.

“Everyone loves locally grown and sourced products, and we’ve gotten a lot of support through COVID,” he says.

“This is a great example of ‘shop local.’”

Hot honey and other Hézues Hot Sauce varieties are available online and in-store at Lost in a Forest and Chile Mojo, and they will be available in other stockists soon.
