The RAA have released their hot tips to stay safe this winter through the low temperatures, dark nights and daily downpours.

With cold and damp conditions due to continue, RAA is urging elderly people to think about personal safety. The RAA has reported a 10 per cent increase in calls for emergency help this winter, handling over 880 calls per month from elderly people raising their personal alarm after incidents with wintry hazards.

Their Top Tips for Winter Safety are:

  • Use sensor lights to ensure your outdoor area is well lit
  • Clear tripping hazards including branches and blown-over objects and fix uneven paths
  • Remove any branches at eye-level for adults or children
  • Use grab rails with reflective or brightly coloured strips on steps and stairs
  • Apply non-slip coatings to paths, steps and driveways, especially on the building’s south side
  • Remove anything obstructing the visibility of your house number
  • Consider getting a monitored personal alert device for emergency help and check with the RAA if you can get this system free through the government rebate
  • Install a Key Safe at the front of your house, and give trusted family and friends the code in case of emergency
  • Check that electrical equipment, power points and light switches are protected from the weather and consider upgrading any old electrics
  • Ensure downpipes flow into storm water drains or rain tanks and not under the home
