Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide marks 1.2 million eggs served as it celebrates 15th birthday

The Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide recently celebrated its decade and a half milestone on the 14th of November.

The Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide recently celebrated its 15-year milestone on the 14th of November.

Hotel General Manager Tony Scrivener took the opportunity to reflect on the hotel’s early days in 2009. The year saw the first season of MasterChef Australia, Barack Obama’s inauguration, and the launch of Windows 7.

In that same year, Grand Hotels International acquired the Holiday Inn on Hindley Street, transforming it into what is now the Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide. Since then, the hotel has grown to become a celebrated part of Adelaide’s hospitality scene, welcoming guests with a commitment to quality.

The hotel shared some offbeat facts and figures that have come from the 15 years of operation.

1.2 million eggs have been served to the hotel’s 1.5 million guests. In that lot, there are bound to have been some double yolkers!

The hotel has gone through a staggering 16,500km of toilet paper since taking over, the equivalent length of 386 marathons.

In line with its playful persona, the hotel’s 15-year celebration included a course for each year the hotel has operated. As a nod to the hotel industry’s pandemic years, 2020’s course was dished up by Executive Chef Nick Filsell and his team wearing masks to deliver butter chicken in brown paper bags.

Scrivener highlighted the hotel’s sustained focus on celebrating South Australian products and supporting local businesses. Over the years, the hotel has seen three major refurbishments, ensuring it remains modern and appealing, winning multiple awards in the process. Notably, the hotel has earned seven consecutive TripAdvisor awards and a coveted place on the SATIC Gold List.

Scrivener said, “since opening, we’ve welcomed over 1.5 million guests, served 1.2 million eggs, and proudly employed 324 dedicated team members, many of whom have been with us for years.”

“Our guests and staff are the heartbeat of the Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide,” Scrivener said. “We’re immensely grateful to everyone who has been part of our journey.”

The building’s storied history dates back much further. It has been home to various hotels, including Hindley International, Hindley Park Royal, Novotel, and the Holiday Inn, before becoming the Hotel Grand Chancellor in 2009.

Before its hotel days, the site was a vibrant hub, first as the original Downtown location, then a Greater Union Cinema, and later, a Time Zone entertainment centre. The hotel’s journey has been marked by quirks and achievements, including the installation of the largest neon signs in Adelaide.

As the Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide celebrates 15 years, it continues to look forward to a bright future, staying true to its South Australian roots and community spirit. The next chapter promises to be as vibrant and exciting as the past decade and a half.
