Brigid, tell us a little about yourself and your experiences in the Arts.

I am an Adelaide based independent artist and curator. I have been involved in the Arts sector since graduating from a Bachelor of Visual Arts with honours in 1998 at the South Australian School of Art. I have been fortunate to travel back and forth between Europe and Adelaide, initially with the Ruth Tuck Scholarship in 2001, when I spent two years away, mostly in the Netherlands and Ireland. Living in Rotterdam, with a studio residency, had a major impact on my view of what was possible in the Arts. There is a very dynamic infrastructure and much more support for the Arts there. I have continued painting and have developed my curating and working in the Arts in Adelaide. I helped start up FELTspace, an Adelaide based artist ran initiative (ARI) gallery and I recently completed my Masters degree. I also teach, and work as a gallery assistant at the Samstag Museum of Art.

What are some of your successes as an independent artist and curator?

I have exhibited my artwork locally, nationally and overseas and I have had the chance to keep my painting practice going! That is success for me. I received the opportunity to work for the Australia Council for the Arts and the last Venice Biennale. This was an awesome experience.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced in your arts career?

The biggest challenge I have faced is surviving financially and supporting myself while maintaining a creative career. I juggle a lot of different projects and I have learned to develop multiple skills. I love what I do, and it is worth it, but it has been a challenge to keep reinventing the parameters of what I do and learning the fine balance of not taking on too much.

What thoughts of your own do you hope to share at ‘How Does Your Arts Career Grow?’ in regards to growing a career in the arts?

Some practical information on how to develop a career, and how to be self initialising, is that you don't have to wait for it to happen; you can make it happen. How to be flexible and open to broad skills development and to choose the path that you love is important, too.

Is there any other interesting information about your up and coming involvement within the Arts that you would like to share?

I have an exhibition, with Ray Harris, titled 'We are Ladies' opening at 5pm on the 22nd of October at Art Room 5 at 5 Kent Street, Henley Beach.
