Since June kicked off a week and a half ago, South Australia has experienced some pretty wintry weather. Joining these cold conditions has been widespread rainfall and a series of cold fronts and low-pressure systems that have been moving throughout the state and the rest of the country.
Last week, starting June 2nd, saw showers triggered early on by a low-pressure trough just off the east coast, which brought wet conditions to northern New South Wales and far southern Queensland. Over on the west coast, in Western Australia, significant rainfall and a separate cold front and trough swept the region, which later caused some pretty cold weather down here in South Australia.
From the middle to the end of last week, south-eastern parts of Australia, including SA, were impacted by a slow-moving low and several cold fronts, which led to the widespread rainfall we experienced and snowfall across some alpine areas.
Over the week, rainfall totals ranged between 15mm and 50mm, with some regions recording even higher amounts. South-eastern South Australia joined western parts of Western Australia, most of Victoria and Tasmania, and areas of northern New South Wales and far south-eastern Queensland as places with the heaviest totals.
Here in Adelaide, our heaviest days of rain were over the long weekend, with Saturday and Sunday each around the 10mm mark, and Monday around 6mm. Around the state, over the week, Uraidla saw just under 80mm, and parts of the Adelaide Hills got up to around 75mm. Victor Harbor saw 63mm and Adelaide saw about 40mm.
Highest Rainfall across SA from June 4th to 10th
- Uraidla (Sutton Creek) – 79.6mm
- Uraidla – 77.6mm
- Piccadilly (Woodhouse) – 76.4mm
- Aldgate – 75.9mm
- Ashton – 75.2mm
- Lenswood – 73.8mm
- Longwood Alert – 72.6mm
- Hahndorf – 71.6mm
- Ashton co-op – 71.6mm
- Verdun – 68.2mm
As we head further into June, the wet weather is expected to continue in South Australia, and locals are reminded to keep an eye on weather updates, especially in flood-prone areas.
Adelaide is in for a wet few days, with light showers expected mid-week and heavier rainfall on the way. Wednesday and Thursday will see chances for a light shower of up to 2mm. While Friday is expected to be mostly sunny, on Saturday, an expected rainfall of up to 7mm is forecast with an 80 per cent chance of showers, especially into the afternoon and evening.
The Bureau of Meteorology continues to monitor developing systems that may bring further wet weather in the weeks ahead, but we recommend keeping an umbrella handy, as winter is definitely making itself known.
