How To Help The Koalas During This Hot Summer

Here are some tips to keep surrounding koalas cool in the heatwave, who you can call on to help, and other ways you can protect them.

As the mercury soars above 40 degrees this week, it’s incredibly important we take care of our native fauna.

The koala, in particular, is vulnerable to this extreme heat.

If you live are surrounded by bushland or in a koala area, it is recommended to leave out a tub of water for koalas to drink from throughout the day.

If you spot a koala low in a tree, you can spray them lightly with a water bottle in a fine mist so as to cool them down.

Monitor any local koalas, if they haven’t moved from their tree or if you’re concerned, call the Adelaide & Hills Koala Rescue 1800KOALAZ (1300 562 529).

Other ways in which you can support koalas amongst the devastation of the bushfires is to adopt a koala through the World Wide Fund for Nature-Australia.

The funding will go towards planting more eucalyptus trees as to expand koalas habitats and care for sick and injured koalas.

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital recently set up a Go Fund Me to purchase automatic drinking stations to be installed in the burnt areas to help in thirsty koalas and wildlife survival.

The Go Fund Me page has now raised over $2 million dollars to support the cause, and funds raised will be also going towards a koala breeding program and a rehabilitation centre for the effected animals.

More locally, the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company has partnered with Adelaide Koala Rescue to assist in rescuing and rehabilitating injured koalas.

For each sale of a koala-shaped treat, $1 will be donated to the service that spans the north-east, eastern inner city and Adelaide Hills ranges.

So be considerate of koalas this upcoming summer, keeping them out of trouble in this heat.
