AQUASLUM out Friday May 2nd via MGM
“I’ve already developed some particularly strong feelings for this tune. It’s put together with taut precision with each throb of the bass and clipped harmony paying appropriate tribute to pop/psych bands of the past. Watch, or rather listen to, these guys closely”
Dave Ruby Howe – triple j unearthed
AQUASLUM is the debut album from Melbourne band HOY. After three years of writing, performing and touring, HOY’s founding members, Liam Linley, Felicity Cripps and Cecilia Dowling, expanded the trio to a six-piece band for the album recording.
Written and recorded in a grand, old country house in regional France, and later recorded in a converted church in the Victorian Goldfields, by producer Pip Norman (TZU, Sparkadia, Gossling), the album features layers of vocal harmonies combined with warm guitars, strings, and analogue samples. Electric rock-outs, psychedelic interludes and classically inspired instrumentals lend a sense of timelessness to HOY’s sound.
The collaboration between Liam, Felicity and Ceci, brings varying influences into the band and their songs. As a collective their material is endless through the arranging of songs, re-writing lyrics, adding or subtracting chords or adding sounds to make it a HOY song. Collaboratively, HOY’s musical principles often start out as conversations about how elements of music can make you feel. Repetition, can turn something new into something familiar within the space of three minutes, with songs that stem from personal experiences or abstract feelings including latest single ‘Wild Dog’.
‘Wild Dog’ was written around 2am after watching ‘Daisies’, an experimental Czech film by Chytilova. It’s not about the film, but the freedom of expression in the making of ‘Daisies’, was inspirational. The song is about loss and memories, and focuses on a place called ‘Wild Dog Creek’, down on the Great Ocean Road. – HOY
