Henley Beach’s iconic, award-winning fish and chips shop, The Stunned Mullet, is entering a new chapter. After nearly 20 years of serving up crispy chips and fresh fish, the family-owned institution is passing the torch to new owners.
The news was shared with the community by Visit Henley Beach on Facebook, who said: “Well it’s the end of an era, as we farewell Amanda, Dino and Daughters from The Stunned Mullet.
“They’ve been the go-to fish ‘n chip shop for many in the area, and from further afield, for nearly 20 years (well perhaps not the girls), and we will miss their happy faces, and great food.
“At the same time, there’s exciting news, as the fish and chip shop welcomes new owner Viren, seen below with Dino. Viren is excited to be taking over and promises the same great service and food going forward. Dino will be around for about a month to help out, so pop in and say Ooroo to him, and Welcome to Viren.”
Founded in March 2005 by Dino and Amanda Papadopoulos, The Stunned Mullet has become a famous fixture in Henley Beach. The family-owned business has consistently earned awards overtime, like in 2023, when they proudly claimed the title of Best Fish and Chips in South Australia.
This award adds to their impressive list of accolades, including top honours at the Seafood Industry Awards and Australian Fish and Chips Awards in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Their secret is the fresh, sustainably sourced seafood they serve up every day that the team fillets on-site.
Dino’s love for seafood runs deep. Growing up in Port McDonnell on the Southeast coast, he was surrounded by his father, a cray fisherman, and his mother, who ran a local fish and chip shop. This upbringing inspired the values behind The Stunned Mullet, where quality, tradition, and a passion for the industry are at the heart of every meal.
Though ownership is changing, The Stunned Mullet’s mission remains the same: to serve the best, high-quality, sustainable seafood in a friendly, community-focused store. With Viren now in charge, the future looks bright for this iconic Henley Beach spot, which continues to be a top choice.
As always, The Stunned Mullet is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 11:30am to 8:00pm, supporting the local seafood industry and serving up some of the best fish and chips in the state.
