A brand-new thriller starring Hugo Weaving and Julia Garner has started filming this month in the state.
The Royal Hotel has started shooting in the remotely beautiful landscapes of South Australia. Directed by award-winning Kitty Green, the movie is set to be a gripping thriller with a familiar faces and star-studded ensemble.
Led by the icon Hugo Weaving (The Matrix series, Lord of The Rings, The Dressmaker) and American actress Julia Garner (Netflix’s Inventing Anna and Ozark). The cast also includes rising actress Jessica Henwick (Knives Out 2, The Gray Man and Matrix Resurrections) and Toby Wallace (Babyteeth and Disney Plus’s Pistol).
The production is headed by See-Saw Films notably known for The King’s Speech, Tracks and Lion. This will be the third movie to be filmed by the company in the state.
Based on true events, the film captures two backpackers (Garner and Henwick) who begin working in an outback bar owned by charming but rough Billy (Weaving). The travelling best friends take in everything down under has to offer before things take a frightening turn.
Andrea Michaels, Minister for The Arts said: “This major international production will bring significant benefits to SA. It won’t just create hundreds of local jobs but employ 225 of our state’s highly skilled screen industry professionals in a majority SA crew and the film will inject an estimated $4.6 million into our local economy, including in the regions.”

The filming is well underway in remote town of Yatina over 200km north of the city. The otherwise quiet township now holds host to over 100 people of cast and crew rubbing shoulders with farmers and country folk
The film will encapsulate our gorgeous country taking South Australia worldwide. Be sure to keep an eye on the project as it unfolds over the next few months.
