The Hurley Hotel Group, in partnership with Adelaide Crows legend Mark Ricciuto, has expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of Mount Barker’s oldest hotel.

The Hurley Hotel Group, a prominent South Australian family-run business, has announced the acquisition of the Barker Hotel, with the transfer set to finalise in early 2025. This marks an important expansion for the Group, as it increases their portfolio to ten properties across the state. The Barker Hotel, formally known as the Scotch Thistle Inn, is the oldest operational hotel in Mount Barker, having been granted its original license in 1846.

The Hurley Group, currently managing enduring establishments such as Arkaba Hotel and Hotel Royal, partnered with notable Adelaide Crows figure, Mark Ricciuto, and the Group’s General Manager, Sam McInnes for this venture. McInnes spoke about the strategic selection of the Barker Hotel, noting its favourable location and the substantial development of Mount Barker. He stsaidated, “The team are excited to be welcoming Barker Hotel to our portfolio. Mount Barker has seen significant growth and is fast becoming South Australia’s largest city outside of Adelaide, and we are thrilled to be a part of this boosting community.”

In terms of operations, McInnes conveyed that there are no immediate plans for major alterations. The primary focus remains on delivering exceptional service in food, beverage, functions, and gaming, while sustaining employment opportunities for the local community.

Previously owned by the Fassina family since 2003, the Barker Hotel underwent substantial renovations completed in 2014, and was honoured with the AHA National Draught Beer Quality Award in 2019. Ross Fassina, founder of Fassina Liquors, shared his reflections on their tenure with the hotel and his contentment with passing the baton to the Hurley Group, ensuring continuation alongside the devoted hotel staff. Fassina said, “It’s been quite a ride for 21 years, but all good things come to an end. The family would very much like to thank our hard-working staff who give the hotel its warm inviting character.”

Additionally, the Hurley Hotel Group recently started construction on the Hotel Panorama, marking another expansion following the acquisition of the Tonsley Hotel. These actions underscore the group’s continual growth and commitment to enhancing their service offerings across South Australia.

Located at 32 Gawler Street, The Barker Hotel remains a cherished establishment within Mount Barker’s vibrant community. Positioned just 15 minutes from the freeway and nestled in the scenic Adelaide Hills, the hotel retains much of its historical charm integrated with modern amenities.

For nearly half a century, the Hurley Hotel Group has been a significant player in South Australia’s hospitality sector. With ten diverse hotels under management and ventures in various community and philanthropic fronts, the Hurley Hotel Group continues to play a crucial role in the state’s tourism and local development.
