Get your skates on! Ice Arena now has a third sheet of ice for you to glide on.

Now open for you to test out, the new ice rink will be used primarily as a training surface for ice sports and to open up the space more for public sessions.

Ice Arena general manager Ryan Rintala says the third ice rink was created to help ice sports grow in Adelaide.

“We’re really hoping that it will create more times and space for figure skaters to be able to train, Hockey players to work on their power and edges control and help us expand skate school to let people enjoy more time out on the ice,” he said.

“After taking over the Ice Arena’s management last year, we quickly realised that the venue was at capacity for what it could offer for ice sports.

“Figure Skating, Ice Hockey and Broomball occupied every minute of open ice that was available.

“All three seemed a bit stagnant in their growth. Once we identified this issue, we started to look for ways to expand our capabilities.”

Ryan said it will eventually offer the ice sport of Curling too, which is when players slide stones toward a target area.

The plan for the expansion came with a lot of thought before Ice Arena cemented its decision. The process took almost a year from its conception to where the rink stands now. The team planned to make another full-size sheet too but were restricted by the footprint of the building.

“With the building originally sectioned off, we were originally looking at some wild ideas like trying put in another floating ice rink where the old ski slope was located and a rooftop synthetic pad,” Ryan said.

“We quickly realised that the best option would be to approach the building owner to take over the front of the building that had been unoccupied for a long time.”

There are loads of events coming up at Ice Arena for you to check out the new ice sheet. Nearly every Friday (excluding 4 weeks around Christmas and new year’s) there is Australia’s First Professional Ice Hockey League – the NHSL – playing at 7pm while you can skate on the new rink and the small ice sheet.

Hockey Camp 360 will run from December 14 to 17 to train under 16s to learn and master their game towards a professional pathway.

There will also be Snow Play with Santa from December 18 to 24 where you can meet Santa while enjoying the magic of playing in the snow.

Ice Arena is located at 23 James Congdon Dr, Thebarton SA.
