The new ice cream-themed playground on the Largs Bay Foreshore is officially open, serving up scoops of fun just in time for the school holidays. Located conveniently close to the Largs Bay Kiosk, the accessible and inclusive playground is a sweet tribute to everyone’s favourite frozen treat.

In February 2023, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield collaborated with the Adelaide West Special Education Centre to develop a playground that reflected the community’s spirit. Building upon the feedback received, the concept for an ice cream-themed playground took shape.
By April 2023, students from Largs Bay School had the opportunity to contribute their ideas by voting on their favourite play equipment designs. Local businesses such as Iguana Creative joined forces with the council to oversee the construction and bring these imaginative designs to life. With support from Dirtworks and SCA, these collaborative efforts transformed dreams into reality.
Now, with the playground completely finished, it’s a blend of playfulness and accessibility. Children can climb a soft serve ice cream cup and slide down, or play in an inclusive mound slide. There’s a climbing tower with a tunnel slide, swing sets, and even a banana split themed seesaw.
From accessible trampolines, to communication boards and sensory ice cream sculptures, there’s opportunities for every child to join in on the fun. Plus, there’s shade and plenty of seating for parents and caregivers to relax while the kids play.

All together, the new playground includes:
- A climbable soft serve ice cream cup with slide
- Inclusive mound slide
- Accessible trampolines
- Climbing tower with large tunnel slide
- Two swing sets
- Cherry sculptures
- Communication boards
- Informative and sensory ice cream sculptures
- Ice cream scoop feature
- Banana split themed accessible seesaw
- Accessible carousel
- Shade
- Seating

Since opening on Friday, the playground has quickly become a popular attraction. There are plans underway to introduce a ‘Changing Places’ facility and new public toilets, enhancing the space even further. In the meantime, temporary facilities near the kiosk are currently available.
The Largs Bay foreshore has always been a popular spot for both locals and visitors, but with the old play equipment reaching the end of its life, it was time for something new and exciting. The new ice cream-themed play space is sure to be a major drawcard, adding a sprinkle of fun to the beautiful beachside location.
