North Adelaide Burger Bar, the home of the original AB meal, has closed its doors for the last time.
Making the announcement over the weekend, many hearts across Adelaide broke for the red and white cafe which has been a staple for many over the decades.
“With heavy hearts, we announce that North Adelaide Burger Bar will be closing its doors for the final time this Sunday. After 73 wonderful years serving our community, we will not be renewing our lease and will cease operations as of Monday,” The North Adelaide Burger Bar Team wrote on Facebook.
“Established in 1951, North Adelaide Burger Bar has been an iconic part of South Australia’s history for generations. Long before late-night food stores became a common sight in Adelaide, we were here, providing delicious meals and unforgettable memories. The legacy of our red and white establishment is built on the hard work, sacrifice, sweat, tears, joy, fun, and relationships of the many families who have had the honour to run this business, including our own since 2005.
“Unfortunately, the current financial climate, rising costs of running the business, and increased utility expenses have made it impossible for us to continue. Despite our best efforts, we have made the difficult decision to close this chapter in the storied history of North Adelaide Burger Bar.
“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our customers who have been part of the North Adelaide Burger Bar “family.” Your support and patronage over the years have meant the world to us, and we will forever cherish the great times and memories we’ve shared.
“A special and heartfelt thank you goes out to all the amazing staff members who have worked with us over the years. Your dedication, hard work, and passion have been the backbone of our business, and we are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you.
This year, Adelaide has a seen series of closures across cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs that has rocked the state. Among these are venues that were once considered industry icons.
Some closures are attributed to retirement, but predominately, the causes are mounting expenses, rising interest rates and ongoing staff shortages, that have placed financial pressure on many establishments.
In the face of these shutdowns, the community is encouraged to support their favourite venues, and throw some love behind small businesses.
