An iconic menu item at a regional bakery has received the tick of approval from one of South Australia’s most revered culinary gurus.

Masterchef winner, restauranteur, critic and author Adam Liaw this week made the trip to McCue’s Bakery in Murray Bridge, and tried the iconic and unique “savoury slice” for himself.

The slice consists of a meat filling between two pieces of pastry, and is topped with cheese and bacon. Liaw describes it as “a cross between a pie, lasagne and ham and cheese roll”. Sounds pretty good to us!

The savoury slice was invented back in the 70s in Murray Bridge, and can only be found in this pocket of our state.

It has become a strong drawcard for those travelling through the Murraylands region, with many refusing to make the trip without a deviation to the family-owned bakery. Famed chef Liaw is no exception, taking to Facebook to share the find with his 194,000 followers.

If the savoury slice isn’t up your alley, not to worry. McCue’s carries a regular range of bakery items and sweet treats, which are just as popular among patrons. With more than 30 varieties of pies and pasties in their range, there is certainly something for everyone.

To try the savoury slice, you can visit McCue’s Bakery at 60 Adelaide Road, Murray Bridge. They are open 7 days a week, from 7am to 5pm. For more information, visit their website here.
