Aussies love of ‘stuff’ is cramping their lifestyles, according to new research from on-demand storage brand SpaceWays. The results of the survey, conducted by SurveyMonkey*, show that Australia is a nation suffering from ‘space stress’ with 53% admitting we don’t have enough space at home to keep all our belongings and 1 in 10 confessing there is clutter in every room in the house.

Space Stress

Space is not only affecting people’s shopping capacities, according to the research it’s also having a detrimental effect on our mental health and even relationships, too. 1 in 5 (18%) fight with their partners about lack of storage and over half (53%) are suffering from space stress, believing they would be less stressed if they had more storage space. The height of this is between the ages of 26-35, which is when Aussies have the most ‘stuff’.

Top Clutter Culprits

1 in 5 Australians (21%) believe clothes and shoes are the biggest clutter culprits, followed by documents and files (13%). In terms of where these items are being stored, people cite the spare room (30%) and the living room (17%) as the most cluttered rooms. The dining room (3%) and bathroom (4%) are the least cluttered and therefore most likely to be the sanctuary of space in the house. Surprisingly, Australians aren’t
keeping things because they’re sentimental, but because they’re practical. 56% are holding onto items because they worry they may need something again but only 19% because the items bring back nice memories. 6% keep belongings because they want to hand down to the next generation.

Upsize to ‘upstore’

It’s surprising that 45% of Australians have a room in their house solely dedicated to storage and 1 in 10 have even upsized their homes due to storage problems. With rising house prices, this is space that many people can’t afford to be losing. Fortunately there are ways around these issues; including hosting a garage sale, hiring a storage facility or bribing your parents to store stuff in their enormous shed.

A company called SpaceWays has just launched in Sydney and plans to clear Australia’s clutter problem by providing easy, convenient and secure storage for a tiny fee (we’re talking $4.90 per month.) They have plans to launch in other major cities this year so us Adelaidians will have to hope our messy homes (and relationships) hold out until then.
