After five decades of winemaking in one of South Australia’s most celebrated wine regions, Bowen Estate is marking a major milestone with the release of its 50th vintage.
Family owned and operated since 1975, the Coonawarra winery has become known for classic, elegant wines that reflect the region’s famous terra rossa soils. Founded by Doug and Joy Bowen, Bowen Estate has remained steady in its approach across 50 vintages, building a reputation for consistency, quality and wines made with a clear sense of place.
The story began when Doug Bowen was just 21 years old, driven by a determination to build a winery of his own.
“I had lots of energy and passion to start my own winery experience. I never wanted to work for anyone else, simply wanted to put all my efforts into my own project,” Doug said.
Doug had studied agriculture before completing Oenology at Roseworthy Agricultural College, but it was a bottle of Mildara Coonawarra Cabernet 1962 that confirmed his future in the region.
“I was fortunate in the late ’60s to share a bottle of Mildara Coonawarra Cabernet 1962. It was a moment in my life I will always remember. My passion and belief in Coonawarra was born there and then.”
The early years were far from easy. Doug and Joy both worked full-time while building Bowen Estate after hours and on weekends, with the Brand family among those who helped them get started. Their first wine in 1975 was made at Brand’s Winery.
Since then, Bowen Estate has grown into one of Coonawarra’s respected family wineries, recognised for Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz shaped by the region’s cool climate and distinctive soils.
For Doug, the philosophy has always remained simple.
“To make the best wine you have to have the best grapes. End of story.”
That vineyard-first approach continues today, with high-density plantings, hand pruning and arch caning helping the family manage cropping levels and fruit quality before grapes reach the winery.
Across 50 vintages, there have been unforgettable highs and difficult seasons. Doug still points to the 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon as one of the greats, after it won a gold medal in every show it was entered in. Other standout vintages include 1984, 1990, 1991, 2012, 2016 and 2024.
The next chapter is now being led by Doug’s daughter, Emma Bowen, who has taken on winemaking and continues the family’s work with Doug’s support.
“With Emma in the winery I am immensely proud of what she is doing and has achieved. I have stepped back from the winery largely over the past few vintages and she has accepted the new responsibility well. Fortunately, we both share the same philosophy and commitment to our style,” Doug said.
For Emma, growing up around the vineyard made joining the family business a natural step.
“One of the lessons I have learnt from my father is that if someone else can do something, I can also have a go,” Emma said.
Visitors to the Bowen Estate Cellar Door will be among the first to experience the landmark 50th vintage this month, ahead of its broader release later in July.
