Inaugural South Australian Heavy Horse Festival celebrate gentle giants this weekend

A great free fun day out for horse lovers, the inaugural South Australian Heavy Horse festival arrives at Wirrina Cove Holiday Park on May 27 and 28 this year.

A great free fun day out for horse lovers, the inaugural South Australian Heavy Horse festival arrives at Wirrina Cove Holiday Park on May 27 and 28 this year.

All manner of large workhorses – Clydesdale, Shire, Percheron, Suffolk Punch, Friesian, Haflinger, Highland Pony, Gypsy Cob, Fjord & Drum Horses – will take part in a great mixture of modern and traditional horse events to celebrate these gentle giants and the role they have played in building Australia.

There will be dressage and cross country and all manner of ridden and non-ridden events for juniors, novices, and open categories. There will be carriage displays and competitions with carriages dating back to the mid-1800s. As well as the on-site catering there will also be a selection of food trucks.

The coming together of many breed associations will see a wide variety of horses, with at least 40 horses registered so far and this will most likely increase before registrations close. Many of the horses and people turning will be State or National champions in various categories.

As a spectator, you are able to come along at no cost to this first event and witness the action across the two days.

If you’d like to compete, entry is open to members of one of the associations and you can purchase a casual membership for the event, so if you have any type of draught horse and would like to compete, entries close May 6th. Camping or other accommodation on-site or nearby is available

The organisers are hoping that this event will become an official part of the event calendar for many, if not all, of the breeds represented in future years.
