Inception, writer/director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the world of dreams, has soared to the top of the weekend box office in Australia. The film, which stars an international cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Dileep Rao and Michael Caine, earned an impressive $1.319 million on 413 screens on first day relaese, marking DiCaprio’s highest opening day figure of all time. Of this $64,247 was for Inception: The IMAX Experience. This is in addition to the successful U.S. launch, which earned $21.8 million.
The announcement was made today by Phil O’Neile, National Marketing Manager Roadshow Films. “Inception” has become one of the most anticipated films of the Winter, and we’re thrilled to see that excitement reflected at the box office,” said Phil. Cris Nolan’s incredible vision, paired with a remarkable cast, has resulted in a unique moviegoing experience that generated tremendous word-of-mouth throughout the weekend.”
