Innovation pays off for organic wine producer, Alkina wines

Organic and biodynamic wine producer, Alkina, has won the ‘Innovative Vineyard of the Year’ as part of the 2021 Young Gun of Wine Vineyard of the Year Awards.

Organic and biodynamic wine producer, Alkina, has won the ‘Innovative Vineyard of the Year’ as part of the 2021 Young Gun of Wine Vineyard of the Year Awards.

Established in 2015 by local winegrower, Amelia Nolan, and Argentinean vintner and owner, Alejandro Bulgheroni, this is the latest accolade to establish Alkina on the local and international fine wine scene.

With 43 hectares of organic and biodynamic certified vines planted in the Barossa, with the oldest dating from the 1950s, the vineyard is proud of its roots and is proud of the renovations that bring the winery into a new era.

After significant restorative work in the vineyard and on the old buildings, the brand was launched and the tasting room opened in October 2020.

The Greenock producer’s farm without synthetic chemicals and believe dead soil creates dead wine.

Winegrower and Managing Director, Amelia Nolan, is excited to have Alkina recognised for the crucial vineyard work they do.

“We strongly believe we can only make unique and interesting wines if our vineyard is healthy and nurtured. It is a privilege to know and care for the place that is Alkina, and to be recognised for what we love to do,” said Amelia.

“We are passionate about soil health and how the ecosystem is linked as we believe we can make wines with more energy and vibrancy if we don’t farm with chemicals.

“Healthy microbiology in soil creates better quality fruits so consumers can enjoy more complex wines with more texture and tannon. This gives the wines a sense of energy as the fruit has more vibrancy and purity that they don’t get with other wine.”

The farm sits on the traditional lands of the Ngadjuri people, who are acknowledged as the traditional custodians.

Visitors to Alkina can delve deeper into the Polygon Project with a guided tasting flight, or with one of the more in-depth experiences. Recently launched as part of the Tasting Australia programme.
