‘Insert Sponsor Here’ Radio Variety Hour – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

In the days before television, when audiences flocked to theatres to watch their favourite serials performed for radio, they were also made privy to the magic behind the show.

This is the basis of Insert Sponsor Here, a radio variety show trying to salvage itself in a landscape where the actors have been poached, the sponsors are pulling out, and a sound man hasn't been engaged. Two actors and the producer go 'live to air', doing everything they can to hold the show together.

The overarching scenario doesn’t really gel but the performances are great, with ample comedy throughout. The cast comprises Rob Goldsmith, Lauren Bok and Sam Marzden creating a variety of character voices and accents, and producing the sound effects live on stage as they act out episodes of a comedy serial, a private eye mystery and a jungle adventure. There's comedy in the script and in their acting, particularly from Bok, who's facial expressions can sometimes be priceless.

Like the good old days of radio entertainment, the audience is encouraged to participate by adding to soundscapes occasionally and applauding at the right moments.

The venue, attached to the rear of the yellow and blue Voice And Music Studio, can be difficult to find, but is just a few doors south of Sir Donald Bradman Drive, five minutes drive from the city.

Good fun.
