Inside the grand venue bringing elegance back to Adelaide’s most beautiful celebrations

Step inside one of Adelaide’s grandest heritage mansions and discover how this iconic location is redefining celebrations with timeless charm and modern elegance.

There’s something about Ayers House that stops you in your tracks. Maybe it’s the graceful curve of its bluestone facade or the quiet charm that lingers in its grand old rooms.

This isn’t just another beautiful building on North Terrace. It’s one of the last remaining 19th-century mansions in Adelaide, and it carries a soul as rich as the city’s story.

This unique venue has proudly operated as a popular hospitality and functions venue with the same ownership for the past 35 years.

Built in 1846, it began as a modest nine-room residence owned by local chemist William Paxton. Everything changed when Sir Henry Ayers, seven-time Premier of South Australia, took over in 1855.

With the help of architect George Strickland Kingston, he expanded it into the stunning Regency-style mansion we see today – It was even one of the first private homes in Adelaide to be fitted with gas lighting. During Ayers’ time, the house hosted cabinet meetings, lavish dinners and high-society gatherings that helped shape the state.

Today, those same rooms are still alive with celebration. From elegant weddings to milestone birthdays, hosting your event at Ayers House means stepping into a space where history and modern hospitality meet. These walls have heard speeches, laughter and no doubt more than a few secrets over the years.

Whether you’re under the glow of fairy lights in the Conservatory or raising a glass in the ballroom surrounded by heritage charm, each space offers a setting steeped in legacy and full of possibility.

As the cooler months roll in, Ayers House is turning up the heat with a series of winter inclusions designed to make hosting your next event both effortless and indulgent. With its grand interiors, cosy corners and warm hospitality, it’s the perfect winter escape without leaving the city.

From June through August, guests can enjoy complimentary room hire and exclusive offerings when booking a social celebration, whether it’s a milestone birthday, a night out with friends or a stylish corporate gathering.

This North Terrace favourite is truly embracing the party spirit in 2025, welcoming birthdays, engagements, formals and social events of all sizes with open arms and Champagne on ice.

Check out their newly released mixology and mocktail packages, crafted for flair and inclusivity. These bespoke drink experiences are perfect for every kind of guest, whether you’re into bold cocktails or prefer an elegant alcohol-free sip.

To make your celebration shine even brighter, the events team has partnered with trusted local suppliers SASH Events and Signature Entertainment to launch all-new DJ and lighting packages. These curated bundles include everything from five-hour DJ sets and dance floor lighting to eye-catching theming and festoon lights tailored to your vision.

While weddings remain the venue’s crown jewel, Ayers House is proudly making space for all the moments worth celebrating. Offering private events of all occasions, from first birthdays to 21st’s, cocktail-style events, engagement parties, social club balls, school formals, charity events and even beautiful celebrations of life.

“Each event is unique because they bring people together to celebrate life’s big moments with the people who matter most,” says Events Manager Laura Nash.

“We offer competitive pricing and end-to-end planning for every celebration, not just weddings,” added Laura.

Recent events have ranged from belly dancers and bold balloon installations at a 60th birthday, to christenings with soft play and bubbles for the little ones. Even the tiniest guests are treated like VIPs.

For those wanting to indulge beyond the private guest list, Ayers House hosts a calendar of public events that showcase its culinary flair and creativity.

Signature High Teas are a year-round favourite, with three tiers of sweet and savoury delights served in the mansion’s stately rooms. Their Gin Bottomless High Tea which launched in January, in collaboration with Red Hen Gin, added a cheeky twist with curated cocktails and colourful canapés, blending tradition with a modern edge.

Their most recent Long Lunch in the Conservatory was a standout. Think bottomless spritzes, curated tasting plates and a leisurely four-hour dining affair that earned glowing five-star reviews. These Long Lunches and High Teas are set to continue throughout the year as pop-up experiences for everyone to enjoy the charming venue and excellent service.

In August 2024, Ayers House hosted the ultra-luxe Champagne and Caviar event, an immersive evening featuring fine bubbles, caviar tastings and gourmet canapés, led by award-winning chef Paul Groves and Champagne experts – This event is set to return for 2025, keep an eye on their socials for date announcements!

To make planning even easier, Ayers House has launched brand-new website, offering guests a fresh look at everything this stunning venue has to offer. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or planning something spontaneous, Ayers House continues to deliver charm, elegance and unforgettable experiences.

Ayers House are proud to announce they are the home for History Festival for the month of May 2025. Ayers House is hosting the Historical Trust of South Australia across several performances and events throughout the month of May 2025.
