Eyre Peninsula

Inside Yambara, Eyre Way’s secluded tiny home just 80 metres from one of SA’s wildest beaches

A secluded tiny home on the shores of Sleaford Bay is giving beach lovers an off-grid Eyre Peninsula escape with sweeping ocean views, wildlife and total coastal calm.

Back in 2022, Eyre Way launched its first stay just 25 minutes from Port Lincoln, helping set the tone for South Australia’s growing tiny-home scene. Since then, the eco-tourism accommodation start-up has expanded to three stays in total, Yambara, Bandari and Maldhi, each offering its own secluded take on slowing down in nature.

For beach lovers, though, Yambara might be the one that really pulls you in.

Yambara, a Barngarla word meaning “away, out of sight”, is a private coastal oasis perched on the shores of Sleaford Bay, just 80 metres from Sandy Point Beach. From the architecturally designed tiny abode, you can look out across the wild sweep of the bay, with panoramic views stretching towards Port Lincoln National Park, Whalers Way and the seemingly endless sand dunes that define this part of the Eyre Peninsula.

It’s the kind of stay that feels instantly removed from the pace of everyday life. One minute you’re stepping through the door, the next you’re opening the electric blinds from a king-sized bed and letting the ocean view do most of the talking.

Inside, Yambara sleeps up to four, with a king bed, a double bed in the overhead mezzanine and a cosy lounge that can also convert into another double bed. The space is compact but clever, with a fully equipped kitchen, two-burner gas cooktop, bar fridge, full-sized sink, stone-top breakfast bar and all the essentials you need for a quiet coastal stay.

The interiors lean into bright, airy design, with oversized double-glazed windows that bring the outside in. There are thoughtful designer finishes throughout, from handmade Moroccan tiles by Tiles of Ezra to linen by Bed Threads and I Love Linen, plus eco-friendly Koala mattresses. There’s also a two-person indoor shower, flushing toilet, reverse-cycle air conditioning, high-speed WiFi and a Telstra service booster.

Outside, the experience opens up even more, with decking, outdoor seating, a fire pit and cooking equipment ready for slow afternoons and starry nights by the coast. Yambara is powered by its own solar-battery system, with instant gas hot and cold water, lighting and power points, making it off-grid without asking guests to give up comfort.

The surrounding landscape is just as much a part of the stay. The crown land around Yambara is home to kangaroos, emus, lizards, birds and ospreys, with koalas also spotted on the property. The waters of Sleaford Bay are famous for whale sightings, with Humpbacks and Southern Right whales most common, while Blue Whales, Orcas and dolphins have also been seen in the area.

Really, Yambara’s magic is in how little it asks of you. Wake up to the ocean, wander down to the beach, watch the coastline shift through the day and let one of South Australia’s wildest corners feel entirely your own.
