An estimated one in four pregnancies (103,000) ends in miscarriage in Australia each year, while approximately 3,000 babies are either stillborn or die in the first 28 days after birth.

Sands Australia Chair, Lyndy Bowden said, “The lead up to Mother’s Day can be very challenging for many bereaved mums. The stream of constant messages can become a painful reminder of what is and what will no longer be. International Bereaved Mother’s Day is an important acknowledgement for the thousands of mothers who are not able to celebrate with their child”.

Sands is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes awareness, education, parent support and understanding following the death of a baby occurring anytime from conception to newborn. Sands provides immediate and ongoing support to bereaved parents, families and friends, along with education and assistance to health professionals and other support services.

“Sands recognises and understands that the death of a baby is a traumatic life event and bereaved parents experience a unique grief. We know so because our volunteer parent supporters have been through the heartache of pregnancy loss themselves. Now giving back to others, they are available around-the-clock to support other families who are grieving following a death of a baby” said Ms Bowden.

Sands is running a number of events to coincide with International Bereaved Mother’s Day, offering parents support, comfort and time to reflect on their babies that have died. For locations and more information about these events visit: www.sands.org.au
