American based race car driver Tom Drewer, who is originally from Adelaide, is set to compete in the first round of the 2012 FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Super Series which will take place at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from March 1 to 4.
Drewer, a former Australian Thundersports Champion (2007) has been living and racing in the USA for the past four years after being recruited by West race cars in Atlanta, Georgia. The experienced racer said that the opportunity to compete in the FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Super Series is very exciting and he is looking forward to showing the other drivers in the Series a thing or two.
“Originally the plan was to come to Australia to see my family for a couple of weeks, but when I was presented with the chance to race in the FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Super Series season opener I immediately pushed my flight to Atlanta back to allow me time to compete at the Clipsal 500.”
“I’ve never driven an Aussie Racing Car before, but after having seen them on TV I was blown away by the power of these pint-sized, speed machines. The Category is one of biggest and most competitive fields outside of the V8 Supercars, so I am really looking forward to being part of the action,” Tom said.
The South Australian drivers in the Series had a great run in 2011, which is something Drewer hopes to hone in on. Adrian Cottrell from SA won the 2011 Championship and former FW1 Aussie Racing Car Driver, Nick Percat went on to win the Bathurst 1000 for HRT in his first year.
“We’re gearing up for a huge season opener at Clipsal, and as the largest national category in Australia the FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Super Series continues to gain momentum. We are thrilled to welcome such a well renowned international driver to the Series. There is no doubt that Tom will be mixing it up in the front pack with the likes of 2011 Series leaders Adrian Cottrell, Kyle Clews, Tyler Owen, Peter Carr and Brendon Pingle,” said Aussie Racing Cars Category Manager, Brad Ward.
In the USA, Tom has received a vast range of accolades for his driving abilities. In his first year Tom achieved 10 wins from 12 races and 5 lap records on circuits such as Sebring, Road Atlanta, Mosport International Raceway and Laguna Seca. Drewer has also won the IMSA Lites 2 Championship, feeder category to the American Le Mans Series.
The 27 year old superstar has competed in the IMSA Prototype Litres 1 Championship, Grand-Am’s Continental Challenge for Volkswagen, completed testing in an American Le Mans LMPC car as well as for Panoz’s ALMS GT2 team, and in 2011 he won in the One Lap of America event, where he drove a Porsche over 12 race circuits in 7 days.
This year, he will again be competing in One Lap of America in a Chrysler and is lined up for various drives in sports car events throughout the USA from his base in Atlanta. He is also a driver coach, working with clients such as Steve Loudin, who has won the GT2 class of the US GT Championship for the past two seasons.
The Aussie Racing Cars will be on circuit for four races over the four days of competition during Clipsal 500, with one race on Friday, two on Saturday and one on Sunday.
International driver Tom Drewer, FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Super Series drivers, including 2011 Series’ champion Adrian Cottrell, along with Aussie Racing Cars Category Manager Brad Ward and FW1 representatives will be available for interviews at 1:00pm on Thursday 1 March and 12:30pm on Friday 2 March at the Support Paddock / FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Pitt Marquee.
