George Michael has been one of the best selling musicians of the current era. He was known as a creative force in songwriting, vocal performance and visual presentation. He won countless awards throughout his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, several years after his tragic passing.
Bobby Fox, with his incredible singing voice and smooth Irish accent, is heading to Adelaide on Saturday 28 September with his brand new show that celebrates the life and music of George Michael.
Bobby originated the role of Frankie Valli in the Australian production of Jersey Boys, but he is also a former World Irish Dance Champion and has toured Australia with numerous theatrical and concert productions, including several sold-out solo cabaret shows at The Regal Theatre in recent years.
Bobby recently spoke with Glam Adelaide about his new show and what it is about George Michael’s music that he loves.
“I really love the intimacy – I feel like I know the man through the music. It’s so honest and so lyrically rich, but it doesn’t feel contrived. You get to see the man, the honesty of the man, and the life he’s lived emotionally through it. It’s so special, but still so accessible. You can enjoy it without feeling lectured. His music has so much honesty and rawness to it.”
Bobby will be joined by music director extraordinaire, Jack Earle for his Careless Whisper – Song of George Michael performances in Adelaide.
“I’ve worked with Jack a few times on different projects, but nothing like this show. It’s always such a pleasure to work with him. I’ve always wanted to work with him on a project like Careless Whisper, but he is very in-demand, as he should be – he’s just magnificent. It’s great to be getting to work with him on this and allowing him freedom to weave his magic.”
Careless Whisper – Song of George Michael will feature all your favourite George Michael numbers, plus a few numbers that have a special meaning to Bobby.
“When it came to putting this show together and creating the set lists, I wanted to keep in mind my audience and the George Michael fans. It’s going to include all the songs you will be wanting to hear, but I also will be jumping into some of the lesser known songs. A lot of George Michael’s hits here in Australia were not hits overseas, and vice versa. His song, Spinning The Wheel was huge in Ireland when I was growing up. I sang it at a concert recently with an orchestra, and it was one of those songs that people came up and asked me what it was and who sang it originally, which really surprised me.”
Bobby promises his two Adelaide shows will be a celebration of George Michael’s life and music.
“The main thing is that it will be an amazing night for everyone – for me, the band, backing singers, and the audience. But the big thing is for me to present that fun and that explosion of styles within his music as well as draw parallels between our lives and his, and to show the depth in his writing. George Michael didn’t just have these party anthems that everyone loves, but there is more depth to his music that I think that mirrors everyone’s life.”
