Interview: Brian Krause – Charming his way to Supanova this weekend

Charmed star Brian Krause will be appearing at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming this weekend at the Adelaide Showgrounds

The Supanova Comic Con & Gaming is officially underway at the Adelaide Showgrounds, bringing some seriously spooky Supa-Stars to Adelaide.

As part of this year’s line up several cast members of the hit TV show Charmed will be making guest appearances, including Brian Krause.

Brian trained at The Actors Workshop in Laguna for five years before he broke through landing the lead role in Return to the Blue Lagoon opposite Milla Jovovich. From there he would star in the Stephen King original screenplay Sleepwalkers, directed by Mick Garris. But it wasn’t until the mid ’90s when landing a role as a possible recurring role on an unknown Aaron Spelling show that he would gain the most recognition as the beloved ‘Leo’ in the television show Charmed. After eight seasons, Krause has had many guest spots on various shows, from Madmen to CSI Miami and Castle.

Brian spoke to Glam Adelaide about Supernova, his time on Charmed, and if acting was always what he wanted to pursue as a career path.

“In middle school, I kind of found my way into drama because it was on the opposite side of the school from a boy who was bullying me – I needed a way out to get home. That was kind of where I first found it. Growing up fairly close to Los Angeles, I knew some other children who were doing commercials and such. My mother asked if I wanted to try it. So, I started doing film acting classes when I was about 16. Originally I wanted to play professional soccer or football, but after a year in university, I realized I’m no pro. That’s when I told myself that I needed to take a year off and give that same effort to acting and I got lucky kind of right from the start.”

Filming for a TV series is a very different discipline to filming a movie, as Brian shared with us.

“I definitely love the discipline that each brings, as well as getting on stage, which is totally different again. TV’s fast – you’re in, you’re out. But these days, I’ve done a lot of small independent movies where you’re shooting those in two weeks, which is kind of a television schedule. These days it’s rare you get on a movie and it takes three months or something to shoot, unless you’re in one of these big Marvel things. Doing TV helped me make a transition, doing some of these independents and being prepared to go at a quicker pace. Although the more time you can have with a role and time to make a scene, the better. But also sometimes you overthink it and it’s not necessary.”

When Brian first started working on Charmed, did he ever think the show would have the huge success that it has had?

“To think we still talk about it 27 years later and it’s still playing on television every day is incredible. We love how people who grew up watching the show are now sharing it with their children and grandchildren.”

One of the many things that made the show so successful was the incredible cast that featured in it.

“It was incredible. I had met Shannen, Holly and Alyssa before the show out in Hollywood at a barbecue we were all at. Getting on the set really made me step up my game and prove that I was worthy to be there.”

Brian will be appearing this weekend at Supernova at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

“With Supernova specifically, the owner, Daniel, brings in his family. He’s just one of the nicest guys. I’ve done a few shows of his already and I’d do anything for Daniel, just to be a part of that show. On the other side of coming to the big event is being able to meet the fans, see Australia and travel. Because filming TV is so isolated from your audience base, you don’t really know how they react to it until you meet them at events like Supanova. It’s always touching hearing their stories and what the show means to them. It really fills your heart up getting to meet the fans and spending time with them.”
