The divine comedy musical Sister Act arrives in Adelaide this March.
Sister Act is based on the iconic film starring Whoopi Goldberg and features original music by Tony and 8-time Oscar award-winner Alan Menken (Disney’s Aladdin, Enchanted, The Little Mermaid). With songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco, this heavenly musical is joyous and uplifting in equal measures.
In the biggest role of her career to date, Casey Donovan leads the cast as Deloris Van Cartier, the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in the hit film. Joining Casey in donning the habit are Genevieve Lemon in the role of Mother Superior and Rhonda Burchmore as choir leader Sister Mary Lazarus.
Casey spoke to Glam Adelaide about Sister Act and what it is about musical theatre that keeps pulling her back.
“I just love telling stories. I love that I get to play different characters, strong characters and fun characters. With a character like Deloris Van Cartier, it’s just she’s such a joy to play. She’s fun, heavy-footed, witty and she’s just, you know, bigger than Ben-Hur. I love that.”
Prior to Sister Act, Casey starred in the blockbuster hit musical & Juliet (which sadly never made it to Adelaide).
“& Juliet was one of those shows that was just so magical to be a part of. It’s a story that celebrates second chances, hope and inclusivity and it’s just one big celebration on stage. It was just such a joyous show to be a part of and the story is so very important. I’m sad that it’s finished in Australia – I feel like it was only just growing its feet. Here’s hoping one day it’ll come back.”
Sister Act is based on the film starring Whoopi Goldberg.
“Whether you know the musical or you are a fan of the original film, there is something just uplifting and joyous about this show that audiences have been loving,” Casey told Glam.
With the character of Deloris Van Cartier made famous by Whoopi, we asked Casey how much of her own interpretation she was able to put into the role in the rehearsal room.
“All of it, basically. There’s a few moments where I pay homage to what Whoopi Goldberg brought to the role – her devilish, cute, witty smile, the way she grimaces with her teeth…things like that. But I was given a lot of room to play with the role. One thing our director said was that every time Deloris walks on that stage, I had to make a splash. I was told to not walk into a scene lightly. She’s always walking with purpose and she always knows where she’s going…even when she doesn’t. But it’s been a lot of fun just developing Deloris around a framework.“
Casey shared with Glam how much fun she has had working alongside such a wonderful cast.
“This cast is a hoot to work with. Working with Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior has been wonderful, and Rhonda Burchmore is hilarious to share the stage with. The cast on the stage make the show as much as the people behind the scenes. Everyone is just lovely and willing to just go above and beyond and I love that.”
Sister Act arrives at the Adelaide Festival Theatre from March 22, 2025.
“It’s very fitting bringing Sister Act to Adelaide being the city of churches. It’s a celebration, it’s 70s disco with all the glitz and glamour and you know, it’s just it’s going be fun. People that have come to this show have just walked away being happy and on cloud nine. I think the Adelaide audiences can certainly enjoy a magical show that is the divine comedy of Sister Act the musical.”
