Get ready, South Australia, as Hockey Dad, the Australian surf rock sensation, is headed our way for Spin Off Festival.
With their roots in Windang, New South Wales, the duo of Billy Fleming and Zach Stephenson brings an authentic and natural energy to their music, captivating audiences with their infectious tunes and exhilarating performances.
In an exclusive interview with Glam Adelaide, Zach Stephenson explains that Adelaide holds a special place in the band’s heart.
“South Australia is the best state… we used to come over a lot. Touring early on, bands like Bad Dreems were kind of like our older brothers. They showed us the ropes. So it’ll be good to… catch up with everybody.” he said.
They formed in 2013, when looking for something to do when they couldn’t surf, and since then, have seen major success around Australia and the world. Reflecting on their career, Stephenson describes their success as ‘surreal’.
“I think we achieved success when we started the band and played our first show at like a pub to like 50 people. That was all we really wanted to do. So everything after that was just another cherry on top.” he said.
“The journey itself has been crazy. Sometimes it’s fast. Everything’s happening once it’s all going on. And then the next minute, there’s nothing on and you’re kind of sitting at home going, what am I?
“But at the end of the day, we get the opportunity to travel the world and play music with friends. And meet crazy, random people in faraway countries.”
The release of their album “Brain Candy” during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic posed unique obstacles. However, Hockey Dad’s label played a pivotal role in keeping the momentum going. They found innovative ways to push their music, including drive-in shows and adapting to the ever-changing landscape.
“I think one of the best things was doing those Drive In shows. Just things like that, keeping ourselves busy. Finding ways to get ourselves out there and be able to play shows and keep ourselves present in people’s minds. Even if it was playing to 400 cars on a Greyhound track.”
So. What’s in a name? What’s in the Hockey Dad name, to be specific. Well, it’s a Simpsons reference.
“Bart and Millhouse are playing a video game, and it looks like they’re playing an ice hockey game. And then it cuts away inside the video game to two dads arguing about their kids. And then all of a sudden they’re just fighting each other. See. Ridiculous?”
Hockey Dad’s performance at Spin Off Festival promises to be an unforgettable experience. Their authentic surf rock sound, combined with their down-to-earth nature, guarantees a dynamic and energetic show.
Oh. And afterwards, chances are Zach Stephenson will be chomping down on his go-to after set snack.
“If I had to pick… I’d go something really fancy I go like salmon and asparagus or something. Keep it real light and mean for the next day.”
