Interview: JD Smith – Bringing Bacharach to the Regal Theatre

JD Smith and Mirusia are bringing the music of Burt Bacharach to the Regal Theatre this Saturday afternoon

For many, the music of Burt Bacharach has been a huge part of their lives. His music is timeless and beautifully written. This Saturday afternoon, two of Australia’s finest performers are joining forces to bring to Adelaide a celebration of all things Bacharach.

One of these performers is JD Smith, who is renowned for his powerful tenor voice. He has captivated audiences around the world as a member of the highly acclaimed musical group, The Ten Tenors.

JD spoke to Glam Adelaide recently about his love for Bacharach and shared where his love of performing came from.

“I knew from the get go that I was a performer/singer and that I would make a career out of it. Singing is something that has always felt natural to me. If you ask anyone who knows me, they would say that singing is a huge priority in my life.”

JD discussed what it is like working with the world renowned Ten Tenors.

“Being a part of the Ten Tenors is the most rewarding and the most exhausting job. I feel very lucky being able to travel the world and sing on some of the best stages, I get to sing alongside 9 other incredible singers and they have become some of my closest friends. It’s a tough gig; the shows are very demanding vocally, and you really need to build up your stamina and make sure you’re always keeping your voice fit. It’s a dream job, travelling the US on tour buses and turning up at venues in your PJ’s. it’s a rock star life and I live for it!!”

This Saturday afternoon, June 17, JD will be bringing his hugely successful show To Hal and Bacharach to the stunning Regal Theatre.

“To sing Bacharach is like eating a block of chocolate on the couch, it’s smooth, relaxing, and you don’t know you need it until you have it,” JD laughed.

“What I love most about these timeless tunes is the way the melodies complement the storytelling. I guess that was part of the magic of Burt Bacharach and his writing partner, Hal David: music and lyrics that work so well together. I cannot wait to perform these classic songs this weekend in Adelaide.”

For the Adelaide show, JD will be joined by soprano sensation Mirusia, who has stepped in at the eleventh hour to fill in for Cosima De Vito, who sadly is unwell.

“This show was originally Cosima De Vito and I, but unfortunately, due to Covid, she had to pull out of the concert, Mirusia has kindly stepped in and has saved the show! That’s show business! I have worked with Mirusia before. We recorded a duet of Right Here Waiting by Richard Marx, which is featured on my album Soul Searchin’ and Mirusia’s album Duets. I have also sung live with her numerous times! She’s a great friend and an exceptional performer.”

To Hal and Bacharach promises to be a feel-good afternoon celebrating some of the greatest music written.

“Audiences can expect to hear some of their most favourite Burt Bacharach and Hal David songs: Say a Little Prayer, Walk On By, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, to name a few! I have really enjoyed discovering some of the hidden gems beyond the hits, songs like: 24hrs from Tulsa and Blue on Blue. I’m really excited to sing! Mirusia and I are supported by the incredible piano playing genius Glenn Amer, so it will be a beautifully intimate concert showcasing these songs and our voices. There may be some other surprise songs that we might perform during the afternoon as well.”

To Hal and Bacharach will be performed at The Regal Theatre on Saturday June 17 at 2pm. Tickets and further information can be found at: www.trybooking.com/CGPYW .
