Interview: Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy – Tina Turner is truly the best

Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy shares what it is like playing Tin Turner in the smash hit musical Tina – The Tina Turner Musical

There is no denying it, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical has won over Adelaide audiences. There are only a few days left to catch this incredible production here before it leaves town on Friday 31st May.

Taking on the role of Tina Turner herself is no easy feat. So much so, two phenomenal people are cast to cover the role.

Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy currently is cast as the alternate Tina at certain performances during the Australian tour of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical. Jochebel is a British actress of Ghanaian heritage. Trained in London at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, She made her professional debut in 2018 in the UK & International tour of Ghost: The Musical playing Louise and understudying/playing Oda Mae Brown.

Jochebel recently spoke to Glam Adelaide’s Arts Editor about Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, her time here in Australia, and what drew her to pursue a career in the performing arts.

“When I was younger I was always singing, especially in church in the choir, singing and dancing wherever I could. Every time I was in front of the TV, I just found myself performing. I began to beg my parents to take me to weekend performing art schools near where we lived. So I did performing arts on the weekend whilst going to normal school during the week. That’s where my passion began when I was younger and it’s just kept growing ever since. When I told my parents that I wanted to follow my passion, they were very supportive.”

This is Jochebel’s first time performing in Australia.

“This is my first time setting foot on the land of Australia. It’s been a journey. Australia is very far from England, but it’s so beautiful here. I really love it. The vibe is great, the weather has been amazing. The multiculturalism here is also great.”

Taking on the iconic role of Tina Turner would be no easy feat and Jochebel spoke with Glam the steps she took during the rehearsal process to put her own spin on Tina and her life.

“Heading into rehearsals for Tina, I found I really had to prepare myself mentally to take on the role. I really had to be in the right headspace. I spent a lot of time getting myself prepared spiritually and mentally. I knew I had to be careful to not turn this into an impersonation. Tina’s story had to be told. I also physically had to get in the zone too. There was lots of research done where I watched videos and documentaries in order to research Tina’s life. The creative team has also been excellent during the rehearsal process.”

Jochebel shared how close the cast has become during this current tour.

“When you’re on tour, the people you are with become your family. We all go out to dinners together, movies, bowling – we do everything together. You end up building a family together outside of work, which is really good with building trust. And boy, are they a talented bunch! The talent on that stage is brilliant. Working alongside these people certainly makes my job as Tina a lot easier. You’re performing across someone who’s giving their all as well.”

We were curious to know if Jochebel had a favourite Tina song.

“In the show, I love performing the Disco Inferno sequence. Whilst Tina only ever recorded a cover of this number, it is so much fun to perform in the show. However, if I had to choose an actual Tina song, it would have to be Simply The Best.”
