Interview: Jordan Tomljenovic – Tapping His Way To ’42nd Street’ Via Scotch College

Jordan T16 year old Jordan Tomljenovic is a Year 11 student at Scotch College who has been performing since around the age of 5. He is about to play song and dance man Billy Lawler in the school’s much awaited production of the quintessential Broadway musical, 42nd Street. Glam Adelaide caught up with him to talk about the show, his role in it and his ambitions.

Jordan says “I started dancing in the first few years and then did anything I could in that realm”. Up to now, that has even included such things as Boy Band moves and Hip-Hop. “Tap hasn’t been my strongest point, so the role of Billy has been a bit of a challenge, but I’m really enjoying it”.

Jordan admits that he’s never seen the original Black and White movie that the stage show is based on, but knew some of the songs from various dance competitions; such as We’re In The Money and the title song 42nd Street. Songs such as Lullabye Of BroadwayShuffle Off To Buffalo and Dames were all new to him.

When asked what he thinks of the Thirties style musically, Jordan says “I totally respect it. I think it’s awesome. But it’s been challenging for me voice wise – to get that 1930/40s sort of sound.”

“Billy is a fun character to play though. He’s funny and flirty.”

The opening of 42nd Street is classic with the front curtain rising to allow a view of a stage full of tapping feet. Scotch College don’t normally have a curtain for their productions, but Jordan is fairly certain that there will be one to allow for that wonderful iconic moment.

When asked about his long term plans, Jordan says “At the moment it’s to audition, after leaving school, for a musical theatre course somewhere either in Australia or possibly overseas.” At the moment though, Jordan is studying singing with Roseanne Hosking and taking SACE Dance at Scotch College.

Jordan’s response to whether, as a dancer, he has a favourite form or style of dance, he replies “Not really. I feel like it changes all the time.” Then jokingly adds, “It depends what day it is.”

If Scotch’s last four productions are anything to go by, audiences will be in for a marvellous treat with 42nd Street. Trust me, these productions aren’t like the school productions of old.

42nd Street will be presented at Scotch College, Carruth Road, Torrens Park on Aug 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at 7pm. Tickets: Adults $30, Child/Conc $15
