No Love Songs is the highly acclaimed new musical by Kyle Falconer, lead singer of the Scottish band The View. No Love Songs will tour Australia this year, including a stop in Adelaide from 21st May to 1st June 2025.
No Love Songs is a powerful and uplifting modern love story that packs an emotional punch, with beautifully written songs and honest storytelling, featuring Keegan Joyce (Rake, Please Like Me, Once) and Lucy Maunder (Chicago, Mary Poppins).
Lucy has just come off the national tour of Chicago, where she played the iconic role of Roxie Hart. For Lucy, it was a real career highlight being part of this touring production, as she told Glam Adelaide.
“Without sounding too cliche, it was the biggest dream-come-true of my career. It has been one of my favourite shows ever since I saw Chicago in London when I was 12. I fell in love with the show way back then. I just loved it right from the get-go and every time I’d see a production, Roxie was the role that I had just aspired to play. So when the opportunity came up to audition for it, I put absolutely everything into it. I took myself back into the dance studio to try and get my dancing skills up because I hadn’t danced like that for many years. It was that very classic moment of just bursting into tears when I got offered the role. And not one word of a lie, Adelaide was our favourite season by far of the whole country. Adelaide is such an awesome city that just embraces and loves the arts so much. It’s a very sophisticated, very educated audience and the Festival Centre is a wonderful theatre to work in as well.”
No Love Songs is inspired by Kyle Falconer’s real-life experiences with his partner Laura Wilde. Songs featured in this modern romance are taken from Falconer’s second solo album, No Love Songs for Laura.
“I’d heard of The View but I hadn’t heard the album No Love Songs for Laura, which the show is based on. As soon as I was doing some research for the project when I was auditioning, I listened to the whole album and I loved it. The songs have been reimagined for the musical and they weave in and out really beautifully in the show. I was blown away by how fantastic the script was as well. So Kyle and his partner Laura Wilde teamed up with Johnny McKnight to write the script. It was written in such a Scottish vernacular; my whole family’s Scottish and I was reading it and laughing just about how funny it was. The show will be slightly adapted for Australian audiences once we start rehearsals to change some of the references for audiences here. The whole show is going to be incredibly beautiful. It’s relatable to so many people; it tackles a lot of issues that a lot of musicals probably wouldn’t on stage. However, it’s also really funny, and incredibly heartfelt, honest, raw and emotional. It’s a roller coaster of emotions from start to finish. It’s also a two-hander, which really allows the audiences to get up close with the characters.”
Lucy will star alongside actor and singer Keegan Joyce, who is best known for his starring role as Finnegan “Fuzz” Greene, the son of Richard Roxburgh’s character in ABC TV series Rake, as well as his featured role in ABC TV’s Please Like Me.
“Keegan and I hadn’t met until we did the announcement photoshoot and a few press things. I saw him in Once and loved his acting and voice, so I knew I was cast against someone really good. When we first met, we clicked, which was great. As there are only two of us in the show, that connection is very important. Keegan will play the guitar for the whole show as well. He’s an incredible musician and I can’t wait to start working with him on the show.”
This funny yet hard-hitting and powerful musical brings to life the joys and struggles of madly-in-love Jessie (Keegan Joyce) and Lana (Lucy Maunder) as they navigate the challenges of their new lives as parents. This is further complicated when singer/songwriter Jessie gets his big break in America, leaving Lana isolated back at home with their new baby. What follows is an emotional roller-coaster of turmoil, raw emotions and tears. Will the sparks that were there yesterday get them through tomorrow?
“This show is such a refreshing take on real-life experiences that I think anybody can relate to it. If you’ve been through a relationship or young love or falling in love, or if you’ve gone through having a baby, or even if you don’t deal with the negative side of things. I think that everybody feels sort of a sense of a loss of identity or have challenges when becoming new parents or being in a long distance relationship. The show is just such an honest take on that and it’s also incredibly funny – I just think people will love it. When I was reading the script for the first time I was laughing because it’s just so real and it’s also never been done in Australia before.”
No Love Songs will play at the Space Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre from May 21 to June 1, 2025. Tickets and further information can be found at: www.nolovesongs.com.au
