Interview: Mourne Kransky – Bringing Christmas cheer to the Regal Theatre

The weirdly hilarious Kransky Sisters return to Adelaide this Saturday with their Christmas tour

This Saturday evening, November 30, the Kransky Sisters are bringing some Christmas cheer to the Regal Theatre with their brand new show, A Cracker Kransky Christmas.

Mourne, Eve and Dawn Kransky live in the quiet south east Queensland town of Esk and have made a huge name for themselves traveling the country (and further abroad) performing their unique take on ‘popular music’. This oddball musical trio marry curious real life stories with a host of uniquely homemade arrangements of popular songs. With kitchen pot, toilet brush, keyboard, musical saw, tuba, guitar and duelling tambourines these three weird yet endearing spinsters present offbeat covers of songs ranging from Nana Mouskouri and Eurythmics to Talking Heads and The Bee Gees.

Mourne Kransky recently spoke with Glam Adelaide about their Christmas tour, Christmas traditions and where the sisters’ love of music came from.

“Oh, goodness. Well, we’ve always played music since we were very young. Our mother used to play the piano and our father, he played the violin. Eventually he gave his saw that he used for the cabinets to Eve and she started playing that as it sounded a bit like a violin – she would use his bow on it. In fact, he ended up getting a cello bow later. But, yes, we’ve always played from when we were very young. We used to get in the lounge room, put the wireless, or the radio as they call it now. We would put that on and we’d wait and hear the songs. Now, sometimes they played the song more than once and we could play more of the tune in one go, and we’d have to wait for the song to come on again, you see, to get some more of it. But that’s how we all learned it. We always played together. It’s what we used to like to do. And we used to get out the kitchen pots and the toilet brush and all sorts of instruments from around the house as well to make music with.”

With a growing following, Mourne shared with Glam how they were first discovered.

“Well, that’s an interesting story. There’s a man who ran the RSL Club in Esk called Earl Madison, and he was walking past our house one day with his Rottweiler. It stopped him on our front lawn to defecate. We’d been playing the music in the lounge room and we were playing Michael Jackson’s Thriller, actually, and he was listening to us apparently, while his dog was doing his business . We came out to see what was going on and then he asked if that was us playing the music? He then asked if we could please come to the RSL next week and play our songs. And so we did. And that’s how we started at the RSL. And from then on, we’ve been playing all over the countryside and all over the world, in fact.

“We were happy playing in the lounge room. Now it’s much nicer playing for the lovely people around the place. But, yes, we didn’t have any thoughts of fame or have any thoughts of going further than our backyard, really. We used to go for holidays at the Esk Caravan park.”

Christmas is a special time of the year for so many, including the Kransky sisters.

“We love Christmas and the Christmas shows we do because we are able to have Christmas with everyone and we never had a Christmas before with anyone. We always just sat at home by ourselves and played knuckles on our Uncle’s grave out the backyard. We didn’t really do anything fancy. Now here we are being able to travel all around Australia and even further afield and share our Christmas time with the lovely people. We also show them some of our favourite things, our special treasured items from home.”

Every family has a special Christmas menu that they love to have on Christmas Day.

“Well, we like to have Spam. And as it’s Christmas, it saves on buying a big ham. We also have some creamed corn and some chips. And we like devils on horseback for entree. And what else do we make? Oh, we like apples on toothpicks. They’re always nice for a dessert. We also sometimes cook white stew, which is where you make a stew and then you put corn flour in it. They call it white stew unless you put some brown coloring in it. That’s very nice.”

The Kransky sisters will be at The Regal Theatre this Saturday, November 30, with their hilarious new show, A Cracker Kransky Christmas.

“We are bringing our special things from home to show the lovely audiences. We’re also going to have, of course, many songs that we sing. We’re going to sing some lovely modern songs by Britney Spears, the Lady who goes up poles, the Spice Girls, Jamelia. We’ve got the songs by the Beatles, AC/DC, Johnny Cash – and all sorts of different songs that we play on our instruments, of course, you know, our tuba and musical saw and guitar and of course our toilet brush, our other instruments from home and kitchen – pot and rice shaker and biscuit tins. So we’ll be playing all those songs for you and of course telling stories of what’s been happening over the past couple of years to us. And yes, it’ll be just wonderful to be there. And of course we’ll have to do some songs together as well with the audience.”

Santa, if you’re reading, Mourne has a Christmas wish list.

“Well, you know, it’d be nice to get something in the Christmas stocking this year, that’s for sure. It’s sometimes quite empty, you know. Santa hasn’t visited for quite some years. Oh, but I would like perhaps a whipper snipper. That would be nice. I’m very handy in the garden with a whipper snipper. Also one of those exercise machines. You know, the ones where you get on and forget now what they’re called… oh the Thigh Master. Oh, yes. I’d like one of those.”
