Interview: Oscar Bridges – Grease is certainly the word!

Grease the Musical opens in Adelaide this week, featuring our very own Oscar Bridges

Adelaide, you better shape up because Grease the Musical arrives in town this week! With preview performances commencing September 28, Grease will certainly be the word.

Since the show’s Broadway premiere and the hit movie starring John Travolta and Olive Newton-John, which went on to become the highest grossing movie-musical of all time, Grease the Musical has triumphed across the globe, with its irresistible mix of adolescent angst, vibrant physically and 1950s pop culture. This production of Grease features an all-new set, dazzling costumes and all those unforgettable songs from the movie.

Starring alongside the likes of Patti Newton, Jay Laga’aia and Paulini is Adelaide’s very own Oscar Bridges. Oscar is no stranger to Adelaide audiences, having performed in countless local productions, but Grease the Musical marks Oscar’s first professional touring production.

Oscar spoke to Glam Adelaide about the show and what it is about performing that he loves.

“When I was three I first watched the musical Cats on DVD, which my grandma gave me. It was sort of like a realisation for me that I really loved musicals. I started doing shows after that and just realised I had a love of performing. I also found, especially through doing Grease as well, that it’s the people and the experience of bringing joy to people that I love so much.”

We are fortunate in South Australia to have so many companies that foster a love of performing and help pave the way for those who are looking at making a career in the industry. Oscar spoke about some of the opportunities that helped him get to where he is today.

“Pelican Productions, and other similar companies, have had so many wonderful opportunities that young people like me were given to help develop our skills. Even my school, Pulteney Grammar, played a pivotal part in my development. It’s great when schools put equal weight towards the arts and not just their sports program.”

Oscar shared with us how he felt the moment he received the email informing him that he was going to be joining the cast of Grease the Musical.

“I was quite numb, to be honest. I remember I was coming home from dance and I got an email notification but I waited until I got home to look at it. It was my Grease offer and I just couldn’t believe it. I don’t think it sunk in for a few months that I was actually gonna be doing it. It was such a strange thing. It happened so quickly with the audition and then the offer, I didn’t have much time to process everything.”

Audiences around Australia are loving this brand new production of Grease the Musical.

“The audiences just love this show so much and the music is so iconic – it’s a show for the whole family. It’s nostalgic for so many as well, especially with the film as well. For me, it was a no-brainer when the brief came out that I wanted to audition for such an iconic show. What keeps people coming back is that joy that they have every night. At the end of the show we perform the Grease MegaMix and everyone’s up and dancing and joining in.”

With Grease being Oscar’s first professional touring production, we asked him how he’s found this sudden new lifestyle and if the cast have guided him in a sudden change of life.

“The cast is absolutely incredible. When I started I was actually 17 years old, so they all took me under their wing and helped and guided me with getting used to living away from home and being on the road with a touring production. They’ve all become my best friends – I really love doing the show with them. It really is the people you do the show with that make the experience that bit more special.”

Oscar cannot wait to perform in front of a home-town audience.

“When I first joined Grease, I didn’t know if the show was going to be going to Adelaide or not so when it got announced that it was I was beyond excited. This is my first professional show, so it was always going to be the most special one for me. But it’s even more exciting that I get to perform it to a home town audience as well. Being able to perform to all my friends and family who have all helped get me here is going to be very special.”

Grease the Musical begins previews Saturday 28 September, with the official opening night 3 October at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

“I think Adelaide audiences are going to love the fresh, new spin on the show. It’s face paced and different to what people may have seen before with Grease. Adelaide audiences always get behind musicals. It’s going to be a great time for anyone who comes along.”

Get ready to be transported to a world of high school romance, unforgettable music, and pure, unadulterated fun!
