Interview: Paulini – Being An American Diva At The Regal

Since her rise to fame after appearing on Australian Idol in 2003, the incredible vocal superstar Paulini has gone from strength to strength. Paulini has been heralded as one of the finest vocalists and performers to come out of Australia, and with a string of albums, awards, solo concert tours and landing roles in several musicals, it is easy to understand why she is one of Australia’s most in-demand performers.

Saturday August 27 2022 at The Regal Theatre, Paulini will be paying tribute to some of the greatest American female vocalists of all time in her brand new show Paulini Sings The American Divas.

I was fortunate to have some time to chat with Paulini in amongst her busy rehearsal schedule, discussing the show, her career and what grew her love of music, long before her appearance on Australian Idol.

“It all really started for me when I was a little girl in church and growing up in and around music all the time. My dad was a choir master and he taught us to sing and musically gave us that encouragement to pursue music. I’m the youngest of six and we all sing. We have a mini choir in our family. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I’d be doing it full time and as a career, but it’s such a blessing. I am very lucky to be able to do what I do every day.”

Idol certainly made Paulini a household name, and since then she’s released albums and performed in solo concert tours, musical theatre and Fringe shows. Paulini has relished every opportunity presented to her and I was curious to find out if she ever takes a moment to step back and reflect.

“So many times! I always take a moment to pinch myself when I land a role or a part in something, when good things happen. It doesn’t matter if it’s small or huge, I thank my lucky stars. One thing I have always tried to teach myself is to always be grateful and to take a step back and appreciate that moment. There have been so many times that I have done it and it’s very healthy and important to do those things because sometimes we can forget how blessed we can be and take things for granted.”

After Paulini’s brilliant appearance in Disco Wonderland last year at the Fringe, she will be back in Adelaide Saturday 27 August, with a show that celebrates the great America Divas.

“I’m paying homage to these amazing American Divas who have left such a great mark on the music industry. These women are a huge inspiration to me. The show is basically me giving the audience a version of their songs through my own interpretation. I’ll talk a little bit about the history behind the songs and my experience in the music industry, because I want to share my connection and stories around these songs and amazing women. So, the show will include a little bit about their lives and mine, and a whole lot of singing. It’s going to be a great fun night where we can all just enjoy this music.

“I’ll be working with the Adelaide band Eraser Description. I’ve worked with these talented guys on the Fringe in 2019, and they are just so much fun to work with. They are very musically talented. I’ll also be joined by my musical director, Michael Tan, and a few other local musicians. I haven’t performed at The Regal Theatre before, but I honestly cannot wait.”

Paulini Sings The American Divas is presented by Markus Hamence.

“I’m very thankful to Markus Hamence, who has produced this show. He’s doing some great things in the Adelaide music scene and I am so honoured to be part of his journey.”

Paulini Sings The American Divas will be at The Regal Theatre, Saturday 27 August at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased through https://markushamence.com/shows-and-events/ or www.trybooking.com/BYMHG .
