For one night only, vocal superstars Prinnie, Paulini and Fasika will be raising the roof of The Moa in Gluttony with their new show One Night Only. Celebrating the music of some of music’s greatest female vocalists and girl groups, this dynamic trio will be in Adelaide on Monday 13 March for an hour of non-stop music.
One Night Only has been developed by Prinnie Stevens, who has performed her amazing one woman show, Lady Sings The Blues, at the Fringe for the past two years. Prinnie and I spoke recently about this new show she’s bringing to Adelaide and where her love of music and performing grew from.
“My family is from Tonga, so I grew up in a very Islander household where everyone always sang, including myself. My family couldn’t shut me up. Even though there was a lot of music around me, my immediate family wasn’t musical. I loved dancing as well. I studied dancing and singing growing up, so it has been a huge part of my life from right back then. After college, I got straight into musical theatre, with my first show understudying Christine Anu in RENT. I just loved how in musical theatre I can combine everything I love – singing, dancing and acting. Whilst I love theatre, I have always had this little dream to be like Janet Jackson, which is what led me to move to America where I lived for five years and was signed as an artist. However, I started to feel like I was one of many artists while I was in America, and really felt drawn to come home and represent my family and culture as an artist back in Australia. That led me to being on The Voice and I really haven’t stopped since then.”
Prinnie’s previous show, Lady Sings The Blues, celebrated the music of some of America’s finest vocalists, such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Whitney Houston. Prinnie shared with me what it is about these artists she loves.
“These women are and were my inspiration. I did the show two years in a row at the Fringe. The first year was just a short run, and it was so well received that I came back last year for a full two week run at Gluttony. It was a lot of fun. It was a show that is about my life and how heavily influenced I am by these American female singers. I love their stories and wanted to portray them in the show Lady Sings The Blues. Not only are they wonderful singers, but their stories are even more powerful.”
This year Prinnie is joining forces with two of Australia’s finest vocalists. I was keen to hear how this new show came about and how Prinnie, Paulini and Fasika met.
“Paulini and I met when we were working on The Bodyguard together. We worked out very quickly how similar we were, especially with our backgrounds and values. It’s not rare to find, but it is rare to find this in our industry. After writing and performing Lady Sings The Blues, I really wanted to share the space with other women and create a safe place to produce shows where we can sing the songs we want to sing, wear the clothing we are comfortable wearing and things like that. For so long in our industry women in particular have been told how to look or what to perform, so this is a great chance for us to be who we are and share it with each other.
“Fasika I met through The Voice when I was doing some work for them. She is younger than Paulini and I, but she is incredible. It’s so exciting to have Fasika working with us on One Night Only so we can show everyone what an amazing performer she is. She really does hold her own.”
One Night Only will be the perfect show to end your long weekend of Fringe shows.
“With the three of us, there is not one weak link. There is just hit after hit after hit. We are covering songs from some of the greatest Divas of all time, as well songs from amazing girl groups like Destiny’s Child. It is going to be a celebration of friends, female artists, and music. Expect all the glamour and glitz from us as well. Because it’s the Fringe, it will be all packed into one hour, but it will be the best hour you’ll spend this long weekend.”
One Night Only – Prinnie – Fasika – Paulini will be performed in The Moa at Gluttony on Monday, March 13 at 6.30pm. Further information and tickets can be found here: https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/one-night-only-prinnie-fasika-paulini-af2023 .
