After four sell-out shows in Adelaide last year, Rebecca O’Connor is returning to Adelaide with her high energy show Tina – Simply The Best.
Rebecca has made a name for herself around the world performing the music of the legendary Tina Turner. In fact, Rebecca is the only artist touring that is personally endorsed by Tina Turner herself!
Rebecca recently spoke to Glam Adelaide about her upcoming Adelaide performances and what it is about Tina’s music that still resonates with people today.
“I think it’s how she portrays the songs. It’s her and her life and what she’s gone through and you hear that in every song that she sings. She speaks from her heart and you hear that come across in her vocals. All her hits, they’re all anthem songs. She’s phenomenal. Her voice in general is just out of this world.”
Rebecca has just returned to Australia after a huge three month tour across Europe with her show Tina – Simply The Best.
“It was unbelievable; I absolutely loved it. It was a sell-out show after sell-out show, which was incredible.”
Each of Tina’s songs are wonderful stories and insights into Tina’s life. She had a brilliant way of connecting to the lyrics and her audiences. We asked Rebecca if that is something she finds when performing Tina’s songs.
“I think you’ve got to connect to her music and lyrics to be able to sing it with the conviction it deserves. Tina had the most amazing way of telling a story through her song and anyone singing her music needs to do the same to do it justice.”
Having made a name for herself as a brilliant performer, we asked Rebecca if she ever thought of doing anything else other than performing.
“Up until recently, I didn’t think this would be my career. It’s just got so hectic lately with gigs and tours and now it’s all Tina, Tina, Tina. I don’t have any time to do anything else. But I love what I do. I’m extremely lucky to be doing what I’m doing and I just absolutely love it. I think it would be time to give it up if I started to get exhausted and hate it. It’s just a powerhouse of a show, and to be endorsed by Tina Turner herself as well, and to be able to keep her music alive that way, it gives me such a drive to do what I do. I have a great team around me that helps me through all that, and they all do their bit to make this job so much fun to do.”
With such a massive catalogue of music to Tina Turner’s name, it would not have been an easy task to create a two hour show.
“That was actually mad. I did that myself way back before I came to Australia. I was singing lots of Tina Turner’s songs in different bands around Ireland and Spain. It started out when I was a kid and I bought the Tina Turner Live in Europe cassette. I picked the best ones, and I kept them in my repertoire. When Tina released her Simply The Best album, then I went and picked a few off that, so I kind of intertwined them. I just put it all together, and came up with what I thought were the best songs to keep in a two-hour show. The irony is that when I was in London there recently, I went and saw the Tina Turner musical for the first time, and they have all the same songs in the musical as I do in my show. So I must be doing something right.”
This coming Saturday, on the 11th August, Rebecca returns to Adelaide for two massive performances of Tina – Simply The Best.
“We’re just back from sellout shows from all over Europe, Barbados, Kuala Lumpur and Poland. It was just amazing. So the band and dancers are tight as. These shows in Adelaide are just going to be electrifying. We’re all looking forward to it. It’s going to be full of all Tina’s hits: Simply The Best, Private Dancer, When The Heartache Is Over, We Don’t Need Another Hero, What’s Love Got To Do With It?, and of course the anthem, Proud Mary. There will be plenty of costume changes and it’s just going to be a ball of fun.”
Don’t miss seeing Rebecca O’Connor in Tina – Simply The Best. In the words of Tina Turner herself…“Rebecca is so good, it’s scary.”
