Interview: Rob Mills – Performing the hits of Bon Jovi this weekend

Rob Mills is set to perform at The Gov this Sunday with his brilliant Bon Jovi tribute.

This Sunday afternoon, July 27, the incredible Rob Mills returns to town with his brilliant live show paying tribute to the one and only Bon Jovi.

This show celebrates Bon Jovi’s career in all its glory, featuring the hits you know and love, performed by a band of some of Australia’s best musicians backing Aussie superstar of stage and screen, Rob Mills.

Rob spoke to Glam Adelaide about the show, his love of Bon Jovi’s music and how well received the show has been around Australia.

“I think, because Bon Jovi’s music has been around for 41 years now, there are just so many hits that have touched the lives of so many people, ever since the 80s and 90s. Bon Jovi has managed to gather a new audience every decade. I think that’s why my Bon Jovi show has become so popular. Parents are bringing their kids, kids are bringing their parents. It’s pretty awesome.”

We asked Rob what it’s about Bon Jovi, out of all the incredible rock artists, that drew him to create a show around his life and music.

“I loved singing Bon Jovi songs when I was growing up. My friend Joe, who’s the drummer in the band and also the producer of the show, pitched the idea to me last year. It sounded awesome to me. I’ve been singing and dancing in musicals for the last 20 years and I was keen to go back to my rock’n’roll roots. I’d also just been singing a Bon Jovi song in the musical & Juliet last year. I’ve always been a big fan of Bon Jovi, and then this opportunity came up and it’s just done gangbusters. We’re really super proud of the show, and the band that we’ve assembled is one of the best in the country.

“His music is almost similar to musical theatre when you think of how his pieces are written – they are so story driven. Even when I was a kid performing in pubs I was always about the storytelling, even if it was a pop or rock song. Bon Jovi’s lyrics are full of such vivid imagery and stories.”

With so many hits to Bon Jovi’s name, Rob shared how he, and his producer Joe Torre, created the show and the set list.

“There were a lot of songs we knew we had to include – could you imagine a Bon Jovi gig without Livin’ on a Prayer? There are a few songs that we’ve done in different shows that haven’t been done in Adelaide yet. We’ve tried to change it up a little bit to keep it interesting for us as well, which has been good. But It was very difficult to select the core numbers in the show. The set list has changed numerous times until we found the 20 songs that we loved the most.”

Going back to his rock roots, Rob Mills will perform songs spanning Bon Jovi’s 40-year career with hits such as Livin on a Prayer, It’s My Life, You Give Love a Bad Name, Always, Keep The Faith and many more classic anthems! All at the family friendly time of 2pm this Sunday, 27th July at 2pm.

“I think last time I performed this in Adelaide, people didn’t quite know what to expect. So I think for the people who missed out last time, they are coming along knowing more about it and know they are in for a great time. We’ve made it at a pretty family-friendly time slot on a Sunday afternoon, which is like a very musical theatre thing to have a Sunday matinee. I’m actually really looking forward to it. I love doing a matinee, and judging by the audience that we’ve had for this show so far around Australia, it’s the perfect time slot. You can come along with your family, rock out and be home in time for dinner and your favourite Sunday night TV show.”

Adelaide’s very own Rachel Vidoni has been announced as the support act for this event.

Let Rob take you on a journey from the 80s to now! Dust off the leather and denim, cut your sleeves off, and let’s belt out these classics together with an afternoon you won’t forget!
