Interview with Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett

Jonathan MoffettGlam Adelaide Music Editor Ragani Stengewis interviewed Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett. He speaks about his experience playing with the Jackson family, and his upcoming Australian Tour.

Q1. You have been playing drums since you were 6 years old. Is that what you always wanted to do?
A. Dad had a friend who worked at the post office, whose his kids played music. Dad came home asked if we wanted to play in a band. We did. My brother chose the guitar. I wanted to play guitar as well, but I had to play the drums, as we all couldn’t play guitar. It went from there.
Q2. You are touring Australia next month for MJ tribute show, can you tell me about that?
A. I have a 30 year history with Michael Jackson and The Jacksons. Starting from the spring of ’79. Great respect for him and his family. Michael is like my little brother, mentor and I love him. I want to celebrate his life and music, keep his legacy alive.
Q3. Your favourite tour?
A. I loved and enjoyed every tour. Michael and Madonna have amazing productions. Working with Elton John was musically exciting.
Q4. What is your live set up?
A. 5 bass drums, 4 racks, 2 floor, 16 cymbals, 2 high hats and 2-3 snares. I designed the set myself.
Q5. What can the fans expect to see from your Australian shows?
A. Bringing my own style of beats, New Orleans feel. A segment of martial arts on my cymbals. Playing Michael Jackson tracks. I recorded a Christmas album called ‘Christmas Again’ and I’m bringing that with me. I will have time for autographs and pictures. Really looking forward to seeing everyone.
