IT Volunteers needed: Doctors for Refugees

Doctors for Refugees is a non-profit organisation seeking some IT help in maintaining its website and other applications.

Doctors for Refugees is a non-profit organisation which comprises of a group of volunteer Australian doctors, other health practitioners, and concerned community members campaigning for the fair and humane treatment of people who have come to Australia seeking safety.

It’s their belief that health is a human right and the medical Hippocratic Oath requires them to advocate for the health of patients above all else.

Doctors for Refugees is currently seeking some IT help to manage its website and other information technology solutions.

Doctors for Refugees was formed by Sydney GP Dr Barri Phatarfod in August 2013, soon after the reopening of Manus Island detention centre. Concerned at the level of medical mismanagement reported in the Nauru detention centre, Barri formed Doctors for Refugees to unite the voices of Australian health professionals against the abuses and neglect seen in detention – but to also provide a way for doctors to utilize their skills to assist those in detention by reviewing the medical care given to individuals who have requested help.

To date the doctors volunteering at Doctors for Refugees have reviewed the cases of around 300 individuals including children and pregnant women, and have helped achieve positive outcomes for many.

Up to four new IT Volunteers are needed to help the program to continue promoting its work. In particular, individuals are needed with skills in:

  • Website development (using Wix)
  • Salesforce (administration, configuration, development) – approximately 2 hours per week for routine tasks, and developing new things in your own time
  • G-Suite administration (anyone competent in IT could learn this very easily) – approximately 2 hours commitment per week
  • Training – provide training to new users in G-Suite and Salesforce (approx 2 hours per week)

Training and support is provided. Volunteers will need a current police clearance and be willing to join Doctors for Refugees.

More information about the Doctors for Refugees program can be found on their website at https://www.doctors4refugees.org. If you’re able to help out, please email [email protected] or phone her on 0416 087 123 for more information about these or other volunteer opportunities.
