It Was A Milestone Weekend For Paolo Sebastian

From the Logies to Kim Kardashian West and Vogue Australia, last weekend was full of milestone’s for Adelaide design house Paolo Sebastian.

For Adelaide couture design house Paolo Sebastian, The Logies represents an incredibly important platform to showcase their pieces, with accolades including consecutive ‘Best Dressed’ nominations over the last three years. But designer Paul Vasileff was somewhat distracted this year thanks to a little post from Kim Kardashian West which came through smack in the middle of the red carpet on Sunday.

“It was surreal and incredibly exciting, but our team had to focus on the Logies so we had to put it off to one side at that moment,” explains Paul, who at the time was more focussed upon Carrie Bickmore and Delta Goodrem than his phone. His design team didn’t even find out about the shoot or even who they’d designed the corset for until Wednesday when the label reposted the picture online.

“We don’t really have the time to enjoy moments like this, but for a second you think of the process of it all. When Vogue reached out, we said we’d design something especially for the editorial feature, then had a 2-day turn around to make the piece. That just means we’ll go on to their racks. There’s no guarantee we’ll even make the shoot. Then to find out via an online post that we’re in the editorial feature is just incredible. I always dreamt of making it into Vogue, but you’re never sure of the path to get there until you see it happen.”

This, the labels first ever editorial feature in Vogue, helped cap an incredible 24 hours for Vasileff, as Carrie Bickmore and Delta Goodrem were both nominated for ‘Best Dressed’ on the red carpet, with Goodrem heralded as the ‘Best Dressed At The Logies’ the following day.

“Carrie and Ada (Nicodemou) were both custom pieces which we spoke about in advance this year and worked with them to design. We’ve been dressing them both for a few years now so the challenge is always to find a new angle that gives everyone another ‘wow’ moment on the red carpet. Delta’s people reach out to us to for a piece in our collection she really liked and it was our first time dressing her, while Megan Gale just had us sent her some options and she chose herself.”

Vasileff’s rapid transition from the boy who rushed out every month to grab the latest copy of Vogue to be at the forefront of a new generation of Australian designers has been a nine-year journey. From a small studio in Adelaide, realising these milestones is something that he is trying to take more time to appreciate in amongst current work his new collection.

“My aim since I started was to become an international brand, and we’re slowly getting there. This is one of the next steps forward and helps keep reaching out to people. So many people love Kim Kardashian’s style and look out for who is dressing her, and it’s always hard when you’re doing a piece or a collection to step back and know if people are going to like what we’re doing. It’s just simply an honour to have the opportunity.”
