The dynamic, fast paced sport of Hit Ball will be making its Australian debut in Adelaide on Saturday 29th June. Developed in Italy in 1986 and popular in Italian Schools, Hit Ball is a great way of improving co-ordination, reflexes and agility. A mixture of volleyball and squash, the game has been likened to Quidditch (from Harry Potter fame) without the brooms.

Two teams will be showcasing their talent with the first ever official game in the Southern Hemisphere commencing at 10am at Seacliff Primary School Sports hall (Barwell ave Seacliff). A free “try-out” session will follow at 11am and is open to anyone over the age of 14. This safe, non-contact sport can be played by people of any skill level, with simple rules that can be learnt in minutes.

The game can be played on any existing indoor basketball court, where the walls and roof also come into play. Each team consists of five players, with goals at both ends of the court. The entire body can be used to hit the ball, whilst only the upper limbs may be used in any attacking strike.

Hit Ball has evolved from several Italian ball sports dating back to the 16th century. Several versions of the game are played across Italy and Europe; regular championships commenced in 1992 after the Hit Ball Italian Federation (FIHB) was formed. Professionals in Italy today play the sport inside a fully glass enclosed court, making for spectacular viewing.

About Hit Ball Australia

Alessandro Gavello is the Managing Director of Hit Ball Australia. Alessandro is a physical education teacher and Independent Performing Arts professional who has taught and played Hit Ball in Turin, Italy since 1993. He is passionate about the game’s positive benefits to students and is trying to develop the game in Australia at the ‘grass roots’ level. He hopes one day it will become a part of every school’s PE classes, and adopted by the indoor sports venues as a fun, exciting alternative to traditional ball sports. This may eventually lead to the establishment of a league not only in Adelaide, but across Australia. Please visit http:// www.hitball.com.au
