Italian superstore, Mercato, set to open second location at old Le Cornu site

The family-owned Italian institution will join the multi-million dollar redevelopment at Eighty-Eight O’Connell as its main trader.

They’ve been providing Adelaide with high-quality, Italian produce since 1972 and now the iconic family-owned business is preparing to open its second location. With Italian household staples, small goods, wine and coffee, the quintessential Italian eatery, Mercato, brings a taste of Italy to Adelaide.

Currently located in Campbelltown, Mercato’s second location will be as part of the massive redevelopment of Eighty-Eight O’Connell. Taking over the old Le Cornu site, the

$250m build will turn the precinct into a food-orientated retail hub where Mercato will slot in perfectly.

The store itself will sit at an impressive 850 square meters, a similar size to its current store and will sit on the ground floor of the complex.

“We are super excited to be involved in such a significant project created by both our team and that of Commercial & General,” says Mercato Managing Director, John Capraso.

“Our plan is to replicate the Campbelltown store with everything retail whilst emphasising our hospitality offering. This includes additional Mercato (ready) made meals and other staple food groups such as fresh seafood, seasonal produce, and butchery to make it a real market.

“We can’t wait to share our family’s rich history as dedicated, personable and community-minded retailers. We have the view that the world needs to eat, drink and live better.”

The huge redevelopment at Eighty-Eight O’Connell will include a bustling market square, outdoor dining and play spaces, a Green Urban School, short-stay accommodation and apartment and townhouse living with building expected to be complete by 2029.

Mercato North Adelaide will open in mid-2025 on O’Connell Street.
