The Gorgeous Festival is just days away. Alongside the ‘gorgeous’ musical talents of Missy Higgins, Gossling, Dan Sultan and The Preatures, Max TV host and DJ Jane Gazzo will be taking over the MC and hosting reigns this year. Did I mention she was once voted one of the Sexiest Women in the World in VHM Australia? Plenty more gorgeous for festival goers. The delightful Gazzo took time to speak with Glam Adelaide ahead of the McLaren Vale music festival.
Are you looking forward to hosting and MCing the Gorgeous Festival this year? What drew you to get involved with it?
Really looking forward to it. I've known festival organiser Alistair Cranney for many years now and heard about the Gorgeous Festival last year. He was describing the event as a family friendly boutique music, food and wine festival in Mclaren Vale and it really resonated with me. The idea of some of the regions finest wineries and best local restaurants all on site plus the line-up of first rate Australian musical talent is just fantastic. I love food and wine and I live for music so this is perfect. Terribly grown-up and civilised I know, but I've done all the big music festivals, (since I was 17 in fact), and you get to the point where you want something more satisfying from your festival experience than just noise, cold chips and dust.
As a music journalist and DJ, how do you find attending these festivals? How do you find a balance between taking it all in and "working" alongside simply enjoying the music?
Well for the past five years I've worked at every festival I've attended! It's usually been back-to-back artist interviews during the day and watching the bands by night so there is some kind of balance. Once the work is over, it's great to get together with the TV crew and get involved with the festival and really enjoy the rest of the evening.
What is one of most memorable music festivals or live performances you've seen?
I think Coldplay at Glastonbury in 2000 still remains for me a definite highlight. At that stage in their career they were only a new, young band, yet to make it big. Their single 'Yellow' from their debut album 'Parachutes' had just come out and I loved it so I made my way to one of the smaller stages at the festival to watch them. I remember it was around 2pm in the afternoon and there wasn't a whole lot of people there to see them but still singer Chris Martin thanked everyone for seeing them "before we become Bon Jovi massive". I think he had a fair idea they were going to be a household name within a few years and be headlining the festival the next year!
Gorgeous Festival really is one of a kind, what do you think it is about Gorgeous that draws so many people to the event?
It's a wonderful day out. Great music, great food and wine in a particularly beautiful part of the country. I think it's a festival South Australians would be proud to support because it showcases so much local produce and has a solid musical line-up. I mean, last year Icehouse headlined and this year Missy Higgins takes top billing. Not to mention this year brings the supremely talented Dan Sultan and Adelaide singer songwriter Butterfly Boucher to the main stage.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing perform at Gorgeous?
Would you believe most of the acts on the line-up? It's true! Especially The Preatures who I'm yet to see live and Gossling. And away from music, there'll be ten local artists who'll create masterpieces based on their interpretation of McLaren Vale on the day, so from an art perspective I think that will be amazing to watch in action.
What's coming up in the future for you, alongside your MAX hosting gig?
I DJ a lot in my spare time and I have a load of weddings coming up which I've been asked to play at, which I love doing. I also write for various music publications and do volunteer work for St Vincent de Paul. With the festive season almost here, we've been busy packing hampers for the underprivileged which we distribute to needy families a week before Christmas. It's so moving to see kids faces light up when you're at their front door with a large food hamper. You feel like you've definitely done something worthwhile. It's a great feeling!
